Purpose:

The General Manager (‘GM’) is the principal executive officer responsible for the strategic leadership, operational management, and financial sustainability of the Gold Coast City Regional Basketball Association (‘GCCRBA’). The GM will oversee all aspects of business planning, financial management, human resources, legal compliance, marketing, and basketball operations to ensure the continued success and growth of the Association. This role serves as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and internal/external stakeholders, ensuring the Association operates efficiently, aligns with its strategic goals, and fosters a strong basketball community on the Gold Coast.

Key Responsibilities for the Role:

Strategic & Business Management

  • Develop, implement, and oversee the GCCRBA strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the Association’s mission, vision, and objectives.
  • Provide research and planning into operational plans, associated budgets, and implementation strategies.
  • Maintain a strong governance structure and Board management framework to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify, assess, and pursue business development opportunities to enhance the Association’s reach and financial stability.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with venue owners, corporate sponsors, government agencies, and community stakeholders

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee the preparation of annual budgets and financial plans, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Maintain and monitor financial reporting systems, including monthly performance analysis against budget.
  • Ensure effective debtors and cash flow management to maintain financial stability.
  • Oversee payroll processing, superannuation remittances, and creditor payments, ensuring compliance with financial regulations.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the Finance Committee/Board.

Human Resources & Organisational Development

  • Lead the recruitment, onboarding, and management of staff, ensuring a high-performing workforce.
  • Develop and implement staff performance appraisal systems, including goal setting and competency evaluations.
  • Maintain and update position descriptions, organisational structures, and remuneration frameworks.
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) standards, fostering a safe and positive work environment.
  • Coordinate and oversee staff training programs to ensure continuous development.

Basketball Operations & Competitions

  • Oversee the successful planning, execution, and growth of junior and senior competitions, including the Queensland Basketball League and ISL-The Allstar League.
  • Manage and monitor staffing, operations, and resources to ensure efficient competition administration.
  • Implement new and improved procedures, workflows, and systems for optimal competition management.
  • Liaise with the Referees Committee to ensure appropriate officiating standards and training.

Legal & Compliance Management

  • Ensure all contracts, supplier agreements, and club affiliations are effectively negotiated, documented, and managed.
  • Uphold confidentiality and dispute resolution protocols, mitigating potential legal risks.
  • Oversee the Association’s insurance policies and risk management frameworks.
  • Ensure all administrative systems and processes comply with GCCRBA policies and procedures.

Marketing, Sponsorship & Communications

  • Develop and execute the GCCRBA marketing strategy, increasing brand awareness and community engagement.
  • Oversee the production of GCCRBA publications, including annual reports, newsletters, and media releases.
  • Manage and maintain the GCCRBA website and social media platforms, ensuring up-to-date and engaging content.
  • Coordinate sponsorship proposals, sponsor liaison, and sponsor servicing to secure financial partnerships.
  • Implement market research initiatives to understand the needs and expectations of the basketball community

Personal skills and experience requirements:

  • Proven ability to lead and inspire a diverse team, fostering a high-performance culture.

  • Strong decision-making skills with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and business needs
  • Strong financial literacy with experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Ability to identify and develop new revenue streams, including sponsorships and commercial partnerships.
  • Experience in fundraising, grant applications, and managing financial risk in a not-for-profit or sports setting.
  • Strong understanding of corporate governance principles, particularly in a sporting association or non-profit environment.
  • Experience in risk management, legal compliance, and contract negotiation.
  • Knowledge of Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) regulations relevant to a sporting organisation.
  • Experience in marketing, brand management, and digital engagement strategies, including social media.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including clubs, sponsors, government agencies, and community partners.
  • Strong public relations and media engagement skills to promote basketball and the Association effectively.
  • Ability to implement technology-driven solutions to improve operations, such as automated systems for competition management, member engagement, and financial tracking.
  • Proven track record in event management, including coordinating large-scale basketball competitions and community events.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation within sports administration.
  • Genuine passion for basketball development at all levels, from grassroots to elite competition.
  • Understanding of athlete pathways, coach development, and referee training programs.
  • Commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in sport, ensuring equal opportunities for all participants.
  • Possession of a Queensland Blue Card
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, work independently and to use initiative and problem-solving skills to organise and prioritise workloads
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use discretion with confidential and sensitive information
  • A high standard of personal appearance and conduct, including clean, neat, tidy appearance, punctual, use of respectful language and manners toward all.
