About Boxing Australia

Boxing Australia Limited (BAL) is the national sporting organisation responsible for the governance, development and high performance of boxing in Australia. BAL is the recognised member of World Boxing and is accountable to the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) for the delivery of its funded programs and governance obligations under the ASC Sport Governance Standards.

The recent departure of BAL's Chief Executive Officer, together with BAL's status as a National Sporting Organisation with responsibility for leading its ASC-funded High Performance program, presents an important opportunity for the organisation to take stock, review and consider its future needs.

The Board has determined to appoint an Interim CEO to lead the organisation through this critical transition period, with a specific mandate focused on leading the strategic plan, supporting the organisation’s governance improvements, organisational capability review and delivery of its high performance program.

The outcome of this work will position BAL for its next phase of growth, equip the incoming permanent CEO with a strong organisational foundation, and ensure BAL continues to meet its obligations as a trusted, ASC-funded national sporting organisation.

Strategic Context

ASC Sport Governance Standards

The ASC Sport Governance Standards set the framework against which BAL’s governance performance is assessed and compliance with those Standards is a condition of BAL’s funding agreement. The Interim CEO will be expected to have a sound working knowledge of those Standards and able to lead BAL’s compliance efforts in close co-ordination with the Board.

Strategic Plan Development

The Interim CEO will be required to lead the finalisation and implementation of BAL's strategic plan, working closely with the Board to consolidate and progress the organisation's priorities across High Performance & Pathways, Competition Excellence, Participation & Community Growth, and Partnerships & Brand, with LA28 as the organising milestone. This includes ensuring the strategic plan involves member association and stakeholder consultation and is underpinned with operational planning, resourcing, and reporting structures.

Governance Reform Program

BAL is undertaking a comprehensive review of its governance structures and policies to meet and, in some cases, exceed the requirements of the ASC Sport Governance Standards.  The Interim CEO will be tasked with leading the implementation of:

  • organisational structure and executive reporting lines;
  • governance policies and procedures;
  • Board reporting frameworks;
  • workforce capability;
  • decision-making frameworks; and
  • organisational accountability systems.

The Interim CEO will be the primary driver of this reform program, working closely with the Board and relevant external advisers, including a Company Secretary, to ensure reforms are embedded with rigour and within the timeframes required by the ASC.

Role Purpose

The Interim CEO provides senior executive leadership to Boxing Australia Limited during a defined six-month transition period. The primary mandate of the role is to lead and advance BAL’s strategic plan, governance reform program and provide the Board with clear recommendations on BAL’s future executive structure.

The Interim CEO will maintain BAL’s operational continuity and stakeholder relationships during the transition period, while ensuring that development of the organisation’s strategic plan is treated as the organisation’s highest priority. The role operates under the direct authority and oversight of the Board.

This is a senior fixed-term role requiring an individual with demonstrated executive leadership capability, sound financial management and governance expertise, and the judgment and interpersonal skill to lead an organisation through a period of significant institutional change.
