THE MORETON BAY SWIMMING PROGRAMME

The Moreton Bay College Swimming Programme operates all year round in our 50m, 25m and learn-to-swim pools. The programme covers learn-to-swim classes, stroke correction and development squads. The College programme runs in conjunction with the Moreton Bay Colleges Swim Club which offers a pathway for swimmers to compete at all levels from Club Nights to State and National representation.

Our goal at MBC Swimming is to foster a lifelong love of swimming and to build a programme distinguished by excellence in training, team unity, character development, and support.  We strive to ensure every swimmer has the opportunity to reach their aquatic potential and compete at their highest level.

We provide programmes and services for our members, supporters, affiliates and the interested public. We value these members of the swimming community, and the staff and volunteers who serve them. APPOINTMENT

Swimming is an integral component of both Moreton Bay College and Moreton Bay Boys' College co-curricular programme, supporting the holistic commitment to the physical and emotional development of students. 

The Head of Swimming is expected to provide visionary leadership, fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous development among staff and swimmers. This role requires a proactive approach to staff management, coach development, and programme delivery, ensuring the highest standards are consistently achieved and maintained.

The Head of Swimming is responsible for the ongoing development and delivery of swimming programs for MBC/MBBC students and external clients. This role is expected to create an environment that maximises student participation across all aspects of the aquatic programme by:

  • Designing and delivering swimming programmes that cater to all levels, from beginners to elite athletes.
  • Promoting the Aquatic Centre to the MBC/MBBC community and to current and potential external clients.
  • Maintaining a positive and professional profile within local, Queensland and Australian swimming communities.
  • Communicating and consulting effectively with coaching staff to uphold industry best practices.
  • Recruiting, training and retaining qualified swimming coaches.

All staff need to be supportive of the values, Christian ethos and Ethical Statement of these Uniting Church schools from P-12.

Reporting Relationships

  • This position reports directly to the Director of Sport on day to day matters.
  • The Head of Swimming liaises with the Colleges' Swimming Co-curricular Coordinator for matters of QGSSSA, Andrews Cup and CSSA Swimming and the Director of Sport for matters pertaining to school Sport.
  • All coaches and coordinators of swimming liaise with the Head of Swimming.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

Program

  • Develop and run all programmes for MBC and MBBC students at the MBC Aquatic Centre - Learn to Swim, Squad, QGSSSA, Andrews Cup, and CSSA training program and competition.
  • Develop and run a squad programme for external clients at the MBC Aquatic Centre.
  • Oversee the Learn to Swim Programme including all aspects of administration and facility management.
  • Take responsibility for coaching the senior squad.
  • Oversee the planning and management of a land-based programme.
  • Support an Athlete Development Programme as required.
  • Attend a range of competitions as identified by the Director of Sport.

Staff

  • Identify qualified swim coaches and instructors to support the program.
  • Provide inspirational leadership and effective management to all swimming staff, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration and continuous improvement. Ensure all team members consistently uphold College policies and maintain the highest standards within the swim programme.
  • Proactively identify and communicate professional development needs for staff and coordinator attendance at relevant State and National swim meets in consultation with the Director of Sport.

Facilities

  • Liaise with Property/Facilities Manager and Health and Safety Officer to ensure the Aquatic Centre is being maintained to meet all work health and safety standards.
  • Work collaboratively and seek approval from the Chief Operating Officer in relation to any matters or works relating to the Aquatic Centre facility.
  • Manage the out of hours use of the Aquatic Centre in liaison with the Events/Facilities Manager.
  • Ensure that the Aquatic Centre is well managed to maintain appropriate levels of property security.

School Competition

  • Organise the QGSSSA, Andrews Cup and CSSA competition seasons, including Swim camps, team development and training sessions.
  • Select the QGSSSA, Andrews Cup and CSSA Swim Teams in consultation with the swimming co-ordinator.
  • Submit nominations for the Annual Sports Awards Evenings in liaison with the Swimming Co-Ordinator.

Marketing

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Marketing and Community Relations to promote the MBC Aquatic Centre.
  • Oversee swim-related communication within the College community.
  • Liaise with appropriate relevant sporting organisations as needed e.g. Swimming Australia and Swimming Queensland.

Administration

  • Submit, manage and ensure compliance with the annual budget through the Finance Manager and Business Manager.
  • Ensure all monetary spend has been approved by the finance team, and finance protocols i.e. purchase orders and purchasing procedures, are strictly adhered to.
  • Manage the swimming programmes with the goal of increasing the income as well as the net profit of the swimming programme annually. Noting this profit will be reinvested into the swimming programme or used by the College for other purposes, at the ultimate discretion of the College.
  • Liaise with the Business Manager in relation to the swimming programme revenue and costs regularly (but not less than once a quarter).
  • Act as the point of contact for all swimming team and club related enquiries and be responsible for the functioning of the Moreton Bay Colleges Swimming Club, including the management and overseeing of the Committee process.
  • Oversee external coach payments, ensuring hours are annotated appropriately on the correct timesheet and authorised accordingly.

SKILLS AND ABILITY

  • Proven track record of building and implementing developmental pathways and programmes to regional, state and national levels.
  • Demonstrated success in administration, development and expansion of club programmes
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop coaching staff, supporting their professional growth and ensuring best practice in coaching delivery.
  • Exhibit strong delegation skills and service as a role model, leading by example in both programme management and direct coaching. Inspire staff and students through visible commitment and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated highly developed time-management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Champion a positive team culture, demonstrating outstanding communication and conflict resolution skills to build trust, resolve issues, and maintain a supportive environment for staff and swimmers.
  • Display exceptional organisational and leadership capabilities, effectively overseeing all facets of the swimming programme and driving continuous improvement.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Current First aid certificate including CPR.
  • Member of Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association.
  • Relevant coaching qualifications (minimum Advanced Licence is preferred)
  • Positive Notice Working with Children Suitability Card or the ability to obtain one, is essential.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS

  • A shared air-conditioned office is adjacent to the pool within the Aquatic Centre.
  • The Head of Swimming will work variable hours across the School terms with direct relationship to scheduling of competitions, training times, planning and administrative tasks.
  • Hours of duty are expected to be greater in Terms 1 and 4 compared to Terms 2 and 3, in line with competition and training schedules.
