Organisational Overview

City of Sydney Basketball Association (CSBA) operates Alexandria Basketball Stadium, delivering:

  • Community basketball competitions for juniors, seniors and social players
  • Representative basketball programs (Sydney Comets, NBL1 East)
  • Development programs (Learn to Play, holiday camps, clinics)
  • Community engagement programs with schools, councils and inclusion initiatives

CSBA is one of the largest basketball associations in NSW, serving 4,000+ members and acting as a key hub for basketball development in Sydney.

Purpose of the Role

The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for leading CSBA’s strategic direction, operational management, financial sustainability and community impact. This role oversees all programs, manages staff and volunteers, ensures compliance, drives sponsorship and fundraising and works closely with the Board to grow basketball participation and ensure CSBA long-term future with financial sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Governance & Board Relations

  • Prepare and present monthly CEO and administrative reports to the Board.
  • Ensure effective implementation of Board decisions and strategic priorities.
  • Provide timely escalation of significant risks, member issues or compliance matters.
  • Act as child protection officer.
  • Act as WHS representative.

Financial Management

  • Oversee all CSBA finances, budgets and cash flow management.
  • Work with Finance Director and bookkeeper to deliver accurate reporting.
  • Lead annual financial audit with auditor.
  • Approve payments and manage accounts payable/receivable within Xero.

Strategy & Growth

  • Implement CSBA’s strategic plan (1–5 years).
  • Liaise with key stakeholders regarding new facilities.
  • Build long-term plan for CSBA to secure additional court space and future stadium development.
  • Lead the Sydney Basketball Alliance (SBA) to raise funds for infrastructure, members and programs.

Programs & Operations

  • Competitions: Work with Competition Manager to ensure local competitions run at capacity with high service levels; explore additional venues and multi-court expansion.
  • Representative Program: Support Representative Manager, staff and coaches and parent/player issue resolution.
  • NBL1 Program:
    • Create and manage men’s and women’s team budgets
    • Negotiate contracts with players and agents
    • Drive sponsorship revenue through Sponsorship Committee
    • Oversee marquee player policy proposal and league liaison
  • Development Programs: Oversee Learn to Play, clinics and holiday camps; grow school engagement.

Sponsorship, Partnerships & Fundraising

  • Lead sponsorship strategy, raising cash and contra to cover NBL1 expenses.
  • Maintain and renew key sponsor partnerships
  • Build new partnerships across schools, councils and corporate sector.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent CSBA at Basketball NSW meetings, NBL1 East forums and annual BNSW Conference.
  • Maintain strong relationships with City of Sydney Council, sponsors, schools and community groups.
  • Act as spokesperson for CSBA with media and community.

People Leadership

  • Lead, motivate and develop CSBA staff and key volunteers.
  • Maintain a positive staff culture with focus on retention and professional growth.
  • Support volunteer committee recruitment and succession planning.

Facilities & Risk Management

  • Oversee Alexandria Basketball Stadium operations, including building maintenance.
  • Plan for next major capital projects.
  • Ensure WHS compliance, child protection obligations and member safety.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Proven senior leadership experience, ideally within sport, not-for-profit, corporate or community organisations
  • Strong financial literacy and budget management skills
  • Sponsorship sales and relationship management expertise
  • Ability to build and execute strategic plans with measurable outcomes
  • Stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills (government, sponsors, community)
  • Experience managing staff and volunteers, promoting a positive culture
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
