The City of Canterbury Bankstown is one of the largest Councils in NSW, delivering a wide range of services to one of Sydney’s most diverse communities.

Opening late 2026, the new Canterbury Leisure & Aquatic Centre is set to become the heart of health, fitness and fun in our community. We are now recruiting a number of casual Health and Fitness Trainers to help deliver safe, engaging and high-quality fitness services across our Leisure and Aquatic centres.

The role

We are seeking passionate and qualified Health and Fitness Trainers to join our team on a casual basis.

In this role, you will support members in their health and fitness journey, deliver group fitness and one-on-one training sessions, assist with fitness assessments and programs, and help create a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for our community.

Shifts may be available Monday to Sunday across a range of operating hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Deliver group fitness, one-on-one training, fitness assessments and programs.
  • Engage with members and support participation in health and fitness services.
  • Maintain safe, clean and well-presented gym and class areas.
  • Set up and pack down equipment safely.
  • Complete required documentation, including pre-exercise questionnaires.
  • Work collaboratively with the Leisure and Aquatic Services team.

You will have:

  • Certificate III in Fitness, minimum qualification.
  • Certificate IV in Fitness, if facilitating personal training.
  • Current CPR and Senior First Aid certificates.
  • Current Working with Children Check, if you are 18 years or over.
  • Fitness registration with an Australian-based organisation
  • Experience delivering customer-focused fitness services, including group fitness or aqua classes.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays.
  • Evidence of full unrestricted working rights in Australia.

Recruitment process

Shortlisted applicants may be invited to complete online screening/testing and attend an Engagement Centre as part of the recruitment process.

Key dates:

  • Applications close: 13 August 2026
  • Online testing issued: 14 August
  • Engagement Centre (group recruitment session): set to begin from 19 August
  • Expected role commencement: 14 September

Pre-employment checks will include reference checks, verification of qualifications and clearances, and a medical assessment. Applicants should ensure their Certificate III in Fitness, CPR, First Aid, fitness registration and Working with Children Check, are current and ready to provide.

Successful applicants are expected to commence from 14 September.

The hourly rate for this opportunity is $37.80, Grade D, Step 1, plus 25% casual loading and 12% super. Where you facilitate Group Fitness Classes, you will be paid $70.00 per hour and where you facilitate Personal Training sessions, you will be paid $60 per hour (inclusive of your ordinary hourly rate, 25% casual loading, any applicable penalty, and an additional payment).

If a group fitness class or personal training session runs for less than one hour, the applicable hourly rate will be paid on a pro-rata basis.

For all other work performed outside of facilitating Group Fitness Classes and Personal Training, the ordinary hourly rate plus 25% casual loading will apply.
