Description

The Organisational Fitness Advisor partners with leaders, teams and employees to improve workforce health, physical capability, wellbeing and organisational performance. Working within Defence Headquarters as part of HQ Fit and Flying High, the role applies evidence-based principles of exercise science, physiotherapy, ergonomics, behaviour change and workplace health to design and deliver interventions that strengthen healthy workplace culture, reduce injury risk, improve movement behaviours and support operational readiness. Services are delivered through the complementary lenses of healthy lifestyles, workforce capability, recovery, and Defence's commitment to putting people first.

The role is embedded within the workplace, establishing trusted relationships with Australian Defence Force (ADF), Australian Public Service (APS) and Defence contractor personnel across all levels of the organisation. By understanding local needs, workplace demands and organisational priorities, the Organisational Fitness Advisor develops practical, science-based solutions that integrate seamlessly into the working day. This includes delivering engaging educational presentations, multimedia content, workplace movement initiatives, group exercise sessions, ergonomic and workplace assessments, individual wellness consultations and tailored behaviour change strategies that improve both physical health and the indirect determinants of psychological wellbeing, resilience and workplace performance.

The Organisational Fitness Advisor contributes to the continuous development of HQ Fit through critical review of emerging research and innovation across workplace health, human performance, physiology, medicine, organisational behaviour and related disciplines. Dedicated time is allocated each week to investigate contemporary evidence, evaluate program outcomes, develop new educational content and refine interventions to ensure the program remains innovative, evidence-based and responsive to the evolving needs of Defence Headquarters.

As visible ambassadors for workplace wellness, Organisational Fitness Advisors are expected to model the behaviours they promote. Regular participation in physical activity forms part of the role, reinforcing a culture where movement, health and performance are normal components of the working day. Exercise programming should reflect both the advisor's professional expertise and the interests, capabilities and operational requirements of the workforce they support.

Success in this role is measured not simply by participation in wellness activities, but by the development of sustainable workplace systems and cultures that enable people to move more, recover better, work safely, perform effectively and thrive throughout their careers.
