Tenpin Bowling Australia (TBA) is seeking Expressions of Interest from experienced and values-driven leaders to join the Board as Board Appointed Directors.

This is an opportunity to help shape the future of one of Australia’s most inclusive and community-driven sports.

About Tenpin Bowling Australia

Tenpin Bowling holds a unique position in the Australian sporting and leisure landscape. It is a true “sport for all” – accessible to all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. From social gatherings on a Friday night to high-performance competition on the world stage, bowling connects communities.

Tenpin Bowling Australia (TBA) is the National Sporting Organisation (NSO) responsible for the management and development of the sport. We are governed by a Board of Directors committed to ensuring the sport’s sustainability, integrity, and growth.

The Opportunity

TBA is currently seeking three (3) Board Appointed Directors to help drive our strategic vision. We are looking for individuals who can bring diverse skills, strategic insight, and a passion for transforming the sport.

The Board is accountable to its members for the operation and management of TBA, including long-term business and financial planning, ensuring that bowling remains a sport of choice for future generations.

Strategic Priorities

TBA’s vision is to elevate Tenpin Bowling from grassroots participation to elite excellence.

Key strategic pillars include:

  • Participation Growth – Engaging new demographics while retaining existing bowlers.
  • Commercial Sustainability – Strengthening partnerships with bowling centres, commercial partners and stakeholders.
  • High Performance – Supporting athletes to succeed on the international stage.
  • Community & Inclusion – Ensuring safe, welcoming and inclusive environments across the sport.

Board Culture & Commitments

The Board is committed to a high-performing culture based on Custodianship, Integrity, Diversity, and Collective Responsibility.

Expectations of Directors:

  • Meetings – Approximately 6-8 Board meetings annually (mixture of virtual and in-person).
  • Sub-Committees: Directors are expected to sit on at least one sub-committee (e.g. Finance, Audit & Risk, Governance, or Nominations).
  • Events: Attendance at key TBA events, such as National Championships or Award nights, is encouraged to maintain connection with the community.
  • Professional Development: Commitment to ongoing governance training (e.g. AICD courses) and adherence to Integrity Frameworks.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking individuals who demonstrate:

  • Strategic Thinking: The ability to analyse complex problems and contribute to effective decision making.
  • Integrity & Ethics: A commitment to putting TBA’s interests first and maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Constructive Challenge: The confidence to ask tough questions and challenge management/peers respectfully.
  • Team Collaboration: A willingness to work as part of a unified team to deliver on organisational goals.

Key Selection Criteria (Core Competencies)

All applicants must possess the following foundations:

  • Governance Knowledge: Understanding of Director duties under the Corporations Act.
  • Financial Literacy: Ability to interpret financial reports, budgets, and KPI’s.
  • Risk Management: Understanding of the legal and compliance environment of an NSO.
  • Strategic Planning: Experience in setting and monitoring organisational strategy.

Specialist Skills & Experience (Desired)

To complement the existing Board, TBA is specifically seeking candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Commercial & Business Acumen: Significant experience in identifying revenue streams, commercial partnerships, and business growth strategies.
  • Digital Transformation & Data: Experience in digital strategy, data insights, and technology-led innovation to improve member engagement.
  • Legal, Risk & Compliance: Senior-level experience in law, regulatory compliance, or managing complex risk frameworks.
  • Brand, Marketing & Media: Track record in building brand value, managing communications, or navigating the media/broadcast landscape.
  • Sports Administration & Government Relations: Experience in a federated sporting environment or engaging with government stakeholders to secure funding and support.
  • Property & Infrastructure: Understanding of facility management or infrastructure strategy (relevant to relationships with bowling centres).

Essential Requirements

  • Director Identification Number (DIN)
  • National Police / Criminal History Check
  • Working with Children Check (or state equivalent)
  • Commitment to Safety: TBA has zero tolerance for bullying, harassment, or discrimination. Directors must champion a safe culture for children and vulnerable people.
