The NRL Sports Scientist will play a key role in supporting the Head of High Performance and NRL Head Coach by providing expert sports science services to enhance player preparation, performance, and recovery.

This role will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of all aspects of sports science support to MWSE players and football staff, contributing to the design of training programs, match preparation, and long-term performance strategies.

The successful candidate will also be expected to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, represent the club professionally at all times, and contribute to maintaining a safe, compliant, and high-performing environment within the football department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and deliver all aspects of sports science support for MWSE players and football staff.
  • Assist the HPM and NRL Head Coach in planning and delivering training sessions, game preparation, and strategic performance initiatives.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders (coaching, performance, and medical teams) and external partners.
  • Represent the club professionally in all rugby league, sponsor, and media-related activities, in accordance with the MWSE Code of Conduct.
  • Contribute to a safe and healthy working environment by ensuring compliance with relevant workplace health and safety regulations.

Key Outcomes

  • Daily collection, analysis, and reporting of physical and training data to performance, coaching, and medical staff.
  • Set-up, operation, and maintenance of sports science equipment and software, including (but not limited to):
    • Catapult GPS
    • VALD products (ForceDecks, NordBord, SmartSpeed, Dynamo)
    • GymAware
    • VueMotion
    • Heart rate monitors.
  • Provide performance insights to inform individualised athlete programs and broader team training strategies.
  • Manage and maintain the athlete management system (Teamworks AMS), ensuring accurate and up-to-date data entry.
  • Develop and implement new workflows within AMS to enhance department-wide efficiency.
  • Build strong working relationships with coaching staff, support staff, and relevant external stakeholders.
  • Hire, manage, and mentor interns to support the daily operations of the Performance Department.

Continued Professional Development

  • The MWSE are committed to providing CPD for the candidate. It is expected that the candidate will undertake available training courses and perform research to enhance personal knowledge, skills and experience as well as complete specified CPD tasks.
  • Attend relevant training courses/seminars/workshops as required to assist with CPD to enhance best practice methods for the MWSE. 

Essential Criteria

  • Experience as a sports scientist and/or strength & conditioning coach in elite sport for a period of 3 or more years.
  • Experience using identified sports science technologies outlined above. 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Postgraduate degree in Sports Science, Exercise Physiology, Strength and Conditioning or related field
  • ESSA Sports Scientist Level 2
  • ASCA Strength and Conditioning Coach Level 2
