The Opportunity

Tasracing, Tasmania's Principal Racing Authority, is seeking an experienced Chief Steward (Harness) to help maintain fairness, transparency, and compliance across harness racing. If you have a deep understanding of racing operations, strong decision-making skills, and a passion for upholding integrity, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact.

In this role, you will enforce the Rules of Racing, and play a pivotal part in maintaining the integrity of race days, trials, inspections, and inquiries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Chair race meetings and trials, and conduct associated inquiries, ensuring compliance with the Rules of Racing.
  • Produce timely, accurate and comprehensive Stewards Reports.
  • Leading a team of race-day Stewards ensuring operational best practice of all team members.
  • Conduct inspections and investigations as directed.
  • Monitor betting activities and investigate as required.
  • Implement swabbing strategy and manage the preparation and despatch of samples.
  • Run positive swab inquiries, represent Stewards at appeals before Tasmanian Racing Appeals Board.
  • Mentor and guide less experienced stewards on regulatory and compliance matters.
  • Provide advice and support to clubs, officials, and industry participants on regulatory issues.
  • Office administration including maintenance of computerised databases and preparation for race meetings.
  • Manage administrative tasks related to stewards' records, race field information, and regulatory databases, pre and post-race.

About You

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

  • Previous appointment as a Steward in the racing industry with a comprehensive knowledge of the Rules of Racing and an understanding of the principles of natural justice and procedural fairness.
  • Previous experience in the conduct of inquiries and investigations.
  • Experience in acting as Chief of Stewards at race meetings.
  • Excellent race day observation and race reading skills.
  • Ability to maintain the highest levels of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse range of key personnel/stakeholders and participants from across the racing industry in a professional manner.
  • Well-developed time management, self-management and organisational skills.
  • Sound written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to consult and resolve conflict.
  • Proven high levels of flexibility and adaptability, including the ability to deal with pressure, ambiguity and change.
  • A current motor vehicle driver’s licence.
