This rare AFL Chief Medical Officer opportunity offers the chance to join St Kilda's AFL program at a pivotal time in its evolution. The program is building, with the right people in the right roles, creating the foundations for sustained success. 

Reporting to the Executive General Manager Football, this critical role is responsible for overseeing the health and well-being of AFL players, ensuring their safe and effective return to play following injury, and providing expert medical care across all aspects of their performance and health. As the Chief Medical Officer, you and the two Doctors reporting to you will manage player injury prevention, diagnosis and treatment, while also offering crucial advice to coaches, players and staff on injury risks and performance impact. With a focus on compliance with medical regulations and maintaining the highest standards of care, you will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team and provide medical coverage during matches and training.

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • Player Health & Injury Management: Oversee injury prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; advise on injury prognosis and performance impact; collaborate on rehabilitation plans; ensure player health and regulatory compliance.
  • Medical Coverage: Provide medical care at matches and training (local and interstate); manage emergencies; conduct player assessments; offer 24-hour on-call support.
  • Advisory Role: Advise coaches, players, and staff on injury impact, prevention, and overall health, including nutrition and mental well-being.
  • Compliance with Regulations: Ensure compliance with AFL rules, anti-doping, and medical ethics; maintain confidential and accurate medical records.
  • Collaboration: Work with physiotherapists, performance teams, and AFL medical staff to monitor player health and provide updates on fitness and injury status.
  • Professional Development: Stay updated with the latest sports medicine practices.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Develop and maintain relationships with AFLPA, AFL, and VFL affiliates.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Medical degree (APHRA registered) with significant postgraduate experience in the management of sports injuries within elite sporting teams.
  • Fellowship of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Medicine, or a Diploma in Sports Medicine (desirable).
  • Current driver's license.
  • Strong ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of Sport and Exercise Medicine.
  • Familiarity with AFL regulations, anti-doping codes and relevant policies.

  • Resilience and Stress Management: Remain calm and effective under pressure, especially in fast-paced or emergency situations.
  • Commitment to Continuous Learning: Stay updated on the latest research and developments in sports medicine to provide the best care.
