Hockey NSW is the peak body for hockey in New South Wales with a vision to inspire the NSW community to connect, play and reach their potential in hockey. We are seeking to appoint two experienced Non-Executive Directors to join our Board and help shape the future of hockey across the state.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Hockey NSW is seeking to address specific skill gaps on our Board through targeted appointments of two Non-Executive Directors:
Position 1: Director with Legal Expertise
We're seeking a Director with substantial legal expertise to strengthen our governance framework. The ideal candidate will bring:
- Legal qualifications with experience in corporate/sports law, governance and regulatory compliance
- Experience in contract development and negotiation
- Understanding of child protection legislation and member protection frameworks
- Knowledge of employment and industrial relations law
- Experience with dispute resolution and complaints handling
- Ability to interpret and apply constitutional provisions
Position 2: Director with Government Relations Expertise
We're seeking a Director with demonstrated government relations experience to enhance our stakeholder engagement. The ideal candidate will bring:
- Substantial experience working within or closely with NSW state and/or federal government
- Understanding of sport funding mechanisms and priorities
- Grant application and acquittal expertise
- Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with government stakeholders
- Knowledge of government decision-making processes
- Experience in policy development or advocacy
- Understanding of local government processes related to sporting facilities
CORE BOARD GOVERNANCE REQUIREMENTS
All applicants should demonstrate the following qualifications and experience:
- Board Experience: Previous experience serving on a board or committee, preferably in a sporting, not-for-profit, or similar organisation
- Governance Knowledge: Understanding of good governance principles and practices for companies limited by guarantee
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to contribute to organisational strategy and vision
- Financial Literacy: Capacity to read and understand financial statements and contribute to financial oversight
- Risk Management: Experience in identifying, assessing, and managing organizational risks
- Integrity and Ethics: Demonstrated high ethical standards and commitment to transparency
- Collaborative Approach: Ability to work effectively as part of a team while contributing independent perspectives
- Stakeholder Focus: Understanding of member-based organisations and commitment to serving stakeholder interests
- Time Commitment: Capacity to prepare for and attend Board and Committee meetings, plus represent Hockey NSW at events when required
Formal governance qualifications such as AICD Company Directors Course or equivalent are desirable but not essential.

ABOUT HOCKEY NSW
Hockey NSW is the state sporting organisation responsible for the leadership, growth and development of hockey across NSW. With 27 member associations, we support over 20,000 players across the state. Our 2023-2026 Strategic Plan focuses on growth, sustainability, pathway development and promotion of our sport.
TIME COMMITMENT AND REMUNERATION
- Board meetings are held approximately 9 times per year
- Committee participation may require additional time commitment
- Terms are for approximately three years
- These are volunteer positions with reimbursement for reasonable expenses
