The Role

This is a newly created senior position at Melbourne’s largest and most successful swimming club in the Metro North district. The Head of Development: Swimming Pathways Coach is responsible for providing high-quality coaching, leadership, communication, and motivation to all stakeholders at Yarra Plenty Waves. This role directly supports the Director of Coaching and the Director of Facilities in.

  • Guiding Learn-to-Swim (LTS) students towards competitive squads, identifying talent and fostering their passion for the sport.
  • Leading and oversee swim progression from LTS through to the state development squad.
  • Preparing swimmers for advancement to competition performance pathways.

Key Accountabilities

  • Oversee Progression: Assist instructors in transitioning swimmers from LTS to squad levels, using appropriate squad language and identifying talent.
  • Program Development: Create and deliver individual programs that align with the overall swimming pathway plan and calendar.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: Lead and mentor Assistant Junior Squad Coaches.
  • Quality Coaching: Deliver coaching that adheres to Yarra Plenty Waves guidelines, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Performance Excellence: Foster an environment of excellence to ensure consistent improvement in swimmer performance.
  • Contribute to Club Events: Participate in the design, application, and supervision of club events (race meets/club nights), providing advice and assistance.
  • Internal and External Competitions: Attend and coach at competitions.
  • Swimming Clinics: Assist in planning and implementing swimming camps and clinics in consultation with the Directors and coaching team.
  • Administrative Support: Perform administrative duties to support the Directors, including planning and designing the swimming pathway, scheduling, and communicating with parents and staff.

Essential Criteria

  • Development Coaching Accreditation
  • Qualified Swim Teacher; teaching swimming and water safety
  • Pool Lifeguard
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Current CPR
  • Ability to meet child protection act requirements
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member
  • Reliable, trustworthy, punctual
  • Availability to work weekends and flexible hours during the week
  • Valid driver's licence with reliable transportation

Desirable Criteria

  • Strength & Conditioning Certificate or equivalent is desirable
  • Experience in the development and design of learn to swim and water safety program administration
  • Adult Squad coaching experience
  • Teacher of Access and Inclusion / Learners with Disability
  • Teacher of Adolescents and Adults
