The Opportunity

We’re looking for an energetic and driven Wheelchair Basketball Head Coach to join our Performance PathwaysTeam.

Reporting to the GM Performance Pathways, this role will manage coaching and the delivery of community and advanced programs and services for Wheelchair Basketball.

In this key role, you will help deliver BNSW’s performance pathway objectives, supporting athlete and coach development programs with a strong focus on engagement and high-performance outcomes. You will be instrumental in building capability, fostering collaboration, and aligning delivery to BNSW’s strategic plan and national performance frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

  • High Performance Program Leadership & Delivery
    • Lead and deliver the NSW State Performance Program across metro and regional hubs
    • Develop frameworks and curriculum for U12–U23/U25 athlete pathways
    • Ensure alignment with Basketball Australia's national high-performance priorities
    • Uphold athlete-centred, inclusive, and best-practice safeguarding standards within all programs and environments
  • High Performance Coaching
    • Deliver direct on-court coaching through camps, hub sessions, and state programs, including identified HP athletes within national team squads
    • Identify talent and support athlete transitions into national programs Oversee and support hub based coaches working with HP athletes, ensuring consistent coaching standards, language, and practice statewide, in alignment with national program
  • Talent Identification, Athlete Planning & Monitoring
    • Track athlete progression and identify talent across the state pathway
    • Lead, in collaboration with Basketball Australia national team coaches and key stakeholders, the development, implementation, monitoring, and review of Individual Athlete Performance Plans (IAPPs) for identified athletes.
    • Ensure the NSW pathway feeds effectively into national programs
  • State Team Program Management
    • Manage and coordinate the NSW wheelchair basketball state team program
    • Support coaches, staff, athletes, and guardians on state team matters
    • Assist with coordination of wheelchair Development Tours
    • Collaborate with the Head of Partnerships on funding opportunities
  • Stakeholder Engagement & National Alignment
    • Build and maintain relationships with Basketball Australia, NSW Institute of Sport, Paralympics Australia, Regional Academies, classifiers, and hubs
    • Establish partnerships with disability, inclusion, and education organisations
    • Liaise with Basketball Australia on classification, talent ID, and national pathway alignment
  • Resources & Pathway Development
    • Create practical resources to help associations confidently deliver pathway frameworks for athletes, coaches, and referees
    • Support planning and delivery of wheelchair basketball education with affiliated member associations
    • Assist with coach and referee development in conjunction with the Coach Education Manager and Referee Department
  • Association & Waratah League Support
    • Support associations within the BNSW GTK Waratah Wheelchair League
    • Maintain communication with affiliated associations and the broader basketball community
    • Liaise with the BNSW Competition Department to ensure classification processes are followed

Essential Requirements

  • Working with Children / Working with Vulnerable People Check
  • Drivers Licence
  • Demonstrated experience in wheelchair basketball coaching and/or program management
  • Strong understanding of athlete development pathways and high-performance frameworks
  • Experience working with athletes with a disability in a sporting context
  • Understanding of needs and constraints faced by athletes with disabilities
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships across diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent written, communication, organisational, and leadership skills
  • Willingness to travel regionally and work flexible hours including weekends
  • Full working rights in Australia

Desirable Criteria

  • Level 2 Coaching Accreditation
  • Knowledge of the Basketball NSW competition structure
  • Knowledge of wheelchair basketball classification systems
  • Knowledge and understanding of Basketball Connect database
  • Representative Coach Accreditation (formerly Association Coach / Level 2)
