About Red Shed

Red Shed is Canberra’s purpose-built community rowing, fitness, and wellness hub located on Lake Burley Griffin, guided by the mission: “Rowing for All. Inspire Wellness. Foster Community.”

Operating for the past 18 months, Red Shed provides diverse rowing programs for people of all ages, stages, and abilities alongside fitness, wellbeing, and community activities. The facility includes on-water rowing, indoor rowing, strength and conditioning facilities, recovery spaces, and a lakeside café and community hub.

Red Shed works collaboratively with the Canberra rowing community, including Rowing ACT and Rowing Australia, to support participation, athlete development, and lifelong engagement in rowing.

As Red Shed continues to grow, we are extending our focus on school-aged rowing participation and development, including the expansion of Junior Learn to Row programs, school outreach initiatives, and the development of a structured Talent Identification pathway designed to broaden access to rowing and support emerging young athletes.

About the Role

Red Shed is seeking enthusiastic and community-minded Casual Rowing Coaches to join our growing coaching team.

This role focuses primarily on delivering engaging and safe rowing programs for:

  • Adult Learn to Row
  • Junior Learn to Row
  • Junior Development Squad (U13–U15)

Working closely with the Director of Rowing and broader coaching team, you will help create positive rowing experiences that build confidence, skills, and long-term participation in the sport.

The role combines regular coaching shifts with an opportunity for additional paid hours supporting boat maintenance and equipment management, providing flexibility and the potential for a consistent weekly workload.

Typical Shifts & Hours

This role includes a core weekly commitment of at least 14 hours, comprising:

Regular Weekend Coaching (8 hours per week)

  • Saturday: 7:00am – 11:00am
  • Sunday: 7:00am – 11:00am

Boat Maintenance & Equipment Support (6 hours per week)

  • Approximately one 6-hour shift each week
  • Flexible scheduling that can be arranged to suit the successful applicant

There is also the opportunity for additional coaching hours, based on applicant interest, experience and availability, including:

Mid-Week Coaching Opportunities

  • 2–4 hours per week coaching on weekday afternoons
  • Typical afternoon shift: 4:00pm – 5:30pm

Additional Morning Sessions Available
Subject to program demand and coach availability, additional shifts may also be available at:

  • 6:00am
  • 8:00am
  • 11:00am

These sessions may include adult participation programs, Learn to Row, school outreach activities, or other Red Shed rowing programs.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Coach Red Shed participants including Adult Learn to Row, Junior Learn to Row and Junior Development Squad programs as assigned by the Director of Rowing
  • Deliver fun, safe, and engaging rowing sessions for participants of varying ages and abilities
  • Promote skill development, confidence, teamwork, and enjoyment of rowing
  • Participate in coach meetings, inductions, safety activities and professional development opportunities as required
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Rowing and coaching team to ensure high-quality program delivery
  • Adhere to and implement Red Shed policies and safety procedures

Boat Maintenance Responsibilities (Included in Weekly Hours)

  • Assist with routine rowing boat maintenance and equipment upkeep
  • Cleaning and preparation of boats and equipment
  • Minor repairs and rigging adjustments
  • General support for maintaining Red Shed’s fleet and rowing facilities

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience in rowing participation or coaching programs
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Enthusiasm for working with adults and young people in a community sporting environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a coaching team
  • Current Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration (essential)
  • Current First Aid & CPR accreditation (desirable or willingness to obtain)
  • Rowing Australia coaching accreditation (Level 1, essential and Level 2, desirable)
  • Current boat licence (essential)
