Description

The Waratahs Analyst supports the delivery of high-quality performance analysis services for the NSW Waratahs men’s program. This role contributes to matchday training and opposition analysis workflows, providing timely, accurate and actionable video and data insights that inform coaching decision-making, player development and tactical planning.

Working under the direction of the Head Analyst, the Waratahs Analyst plays a key role in maintaining analytical standards, supporting innovation, and ensuring alignment with the Waratahs High Performance strategy and game model.

Key Responsibilities:

Matchday & Competition Analysis

  • Contribute to all matchday analysis workflows, including live coding, real-time feedback, and post-match reporting.
  • Deliver accurate and timely analysis outputs to support in-game and post-game decision-making by coaches.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of post-match review packages aligned to team objectives and KPIs.

Training Analysis & Player Development

  • Capture and manage high-quality training footage across Waratahs programs.
  • Produce daily training analysis outputs, including clipped reviews, stacked packages and individual player clips.
  • Support coaches in delivering clear learning objectives through video and data-based feedback.

Tactical & Opposition Analysis

  • Take responsibility for a defined tactical area (e.g. attack, defence, set-piece or transition), delivering evidence-based insights.
  • Produce structured opposition analysis, including previews, trend analysis and opposition databases.
  • Present concise and relevant tactical intelligence to support weekly preparation and planning meetings.

Systems, Technology & Data Management

  • Assist with the management and maintenance of analysis systems, software and hardware (e.g. SportsCode, Hudl, cameras and servers).
  • Ensure reliability, consistency and efficiency of analysis workflows across matchday and training environments.
  • Support database management and long-term storage of video and analytical data.

Collaboration, Communication & Education

  • Communicate analytical insights clearly, translating complex video and data into practical messages for coaches and players.
  • Work collaboratively with coaches, strength & conditioning, medical and performance staff to align analysis outputs with broader performance objectives.
  • Assist in mentoring interns or junior analysts and contribute to the education of staff in the effective use of analysis tools

  • Demonstrate professionalism, adaptability and reliability in high-pressure and time-constrained environments.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of best-practice analysis processes and quality control standards.
  • Actively explore and support the integration of new technologies, advanced analytics and AI-driven tools to improve efficiency and impact.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science, Performance Analysis or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Strong working knowledge of performance analysis tools, particularly SportsCode and video analysis platforms.
  • Strong rugby knowledge and understanding of team tactics and game models.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering performance analysis support within an elite, semi-elite or high-performance sporting environment, preferably rugby or another invasion-based team sport.
  • Experience contributing to matchday analysis workflows, including live coding, real-time feedback and post-match review processes.
  • Practical experience capturing, coding and analysing training and match footage, producing timely and coach-ready video outputs.
  • Experience assisting with or producing opposition analysis, including previews, trend identification and opposition databases.
  • Strong applied knowledge of rugby union laws, tactics and game models, and how analysis supports performance outcomes.
  • Sound understanding of performance analysis methodologies, including video coding, tagging structures, review frameworks and feedback delivery.
  • Working knowledge of analysis software and technologies, particularly SportsCode, Hudl and associated video capture systems.
  • Understanding of emerging trends in performance analysis, including advanced analytics, automation and AI-enabled tools (desirable)

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate qualification in sports science or performance analysis.
  • Experience in an elite or professional sporting environment.
  • Advanced Excel or data analysis capability.
  • Experience with coding templates, opposition databases and analytical reporting.
