GWS GIANTS - Analytics Department
Location: Sydney Olympic Park & GIANTS Training Facilities
Type: Unpaid Internship (Educational Placement Only)
Duration: December 2025 – September 2026 (approx. 7-10 hour per week)
OVERVIEW
The GWS GIANTS are offering a hands-on internship opportunity within the Analytics Department for the 2026 AFL season. This placement provides practical experience supporting both our AFL and AFL Reserve Grade programs, including matchday and mid-week analysis activities.
This position is ideal for individuals seeking practical experience in elite sport, performance analysis, and AFL analytics workflows.
PLACEMENT PATHWAYS
This internship can be completed through either the following pathways:
1. University Vocational Placement (For-Credit Placement)
For students undertaking a mandatory practical or internship componenet as part of their degree.
Requirements:
- University approval for the placement
- Certificate of Currency (insurance, provided by university)
- Student Placement Agreement (between university and the Club)
- CV / Resume
- NSW Working With Children Check (Volunteer check is sufficient)
2. Volunteer Internship (Non-University Placement)
For individuals seeking experience outside of formal study.
This pathway is short-term, educational, and compliant with Fair Work’s vocational placement guidelines.

Please note: This internship is strictly educational. It is unpaid, and expenses incurred during internship duties will be reimbursed. No employment relationship is created.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Matchday Analysis
- Assist with setup, filming, live coding, and in-game analysis of Reseve Grade matches.
- Mid-week Analysis
- Compile pre and post-game analytical reports.
- Conduct performance analysis projects that support player education and decision-making.
- Code and organise vision using Sportscode.
- Build and maintain vision databases.
- Assist with live training analysis and filming.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the internship, the successful applicant(s) will have gained:
- A strong understanding of performance analysis in elite sport.
- Matchday setup and delivery skills.
- Proficiency in analysis preparation and reporting.
- Competence in Tableau for data visualisation.
- Practical knowledge of Sportscode, including:
- AFL matchday and mid-week workflows.
- Databasing, timeline usage, and sorter windows.
- Filming techniques and vision capture workflows for training and matchday.
PREREQUISITES
Applicants should demonstrate:
- Strong knowledge of AFL (as a player and/or fan).
- Interest in performance analysis and elite sport.
- Relibaility, initiative, and attention to detail.
- Availability for 7-10 hours per week, including weekend matchdays (Saturday or Sunday) and mid-week analysis sessions.
- Familiarity with Apple computers, Sportscode, Excel, Keynote, Tableau, or other analytical software (preferred).
- A current and valid National Police Check (issued within the last 6 months).
- A NSW Working Working With Children Check (WWCC) - a volunteer WWCC is sufficient for this unpaid internship.
