The Director of Coaching plays a pivotal role in shaping the Club’s coaching framework and fostering the growth and development of our young athletes. This position requires a passionate, knowledgeable individual dedicated to basketball and committed to enhancing the skills and confidence of both coaches and players.
Working closely with Coach Justin Schueller - Director of Programs, the Director of Coaching ensures that all coaching practices align with the Club’s philosophy, standards, and development objectives.
The Director of Coaching is essential in ensuring the Williamstown Cannons deliver a high-quality, development-focused basketball experience for both coaches and players. By working collaboratively Coach Justin Schueller and supporting the coaching community, this role is instrumental in fostering a culture of growth, commitment, and excellence, with particular emphasis on the Under 10 development program as the foundation of future success.
Key Responsibilities
1. Program Support
- Develop a thorough understanding of the Club’s coaching programs as designed by the Director of Programs.
- Attend all relevant programs and Coach Education sessions to fully grasp the intent, methodology, and desired outcomes of the Cannons framework.
2. Coaching Support
- Focus primarily on Mini Cannons, Under 8, and Under 10 teams as the key entry point into the Williamstown Cannons, ensuring players build strong fundamental skills and understand Club standards and expectations to prepare for Under 12 programs and competitions.
- Observe Cannons Academy teams (or others as identified by the Director of Programs) following program implementation to reinforce key coaching principles.
- Provide constructive feedback, mentoring, and practical support to coaches to help them deliver programs confidently and effectively.
3. Communication and Collaboration
- Maintain open and consistent communication with all key stakeholders, including the Executive Committee, Athletes & Coaches Subcommittee (ACSC), Director of Programs, and coaching staff.
- Work collaboratively with coaches and the ACSC to identify opportunities for improvement and share insights, resources, and best practices across teams.
4. Training and Development
- Actively participate in Coach Education workshops and Director of Programs sessions to support the continuous professional development of coaching staff and personal growth.
- Promote a culture of learning, collaboration, and curiosity among coaches, encouraging them to share ideas, seek feedback, and engage in reflective practice.
5. Monitoring and Evaluation
- Regularly assess the effectiveness of coaching practices and player development in line with the guidelines established by the Director of Programs.
- Report to the Committee via the ACSC twice per season, or as requested by the President.
- Collect and evaluate feedback from coaches and players to refine and enhance coaching programs and delivery.
6. Club Representation
- Represent the Williamstown Cannons at relevant meetings, training sessions, and community events related to coaching and player development.
- Uphold and promote the Club’s values, fostering a positive and professional image within the basketball community.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in basketball coaching, ideally at the junior level.
- Strong understanding of coaching principles, player development, and age-appropriate training methods.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and build strong relationships with coaches, athletes, parents, and Club officials.
- Commitment to creating a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment for all participants.
Location & Hours
Locations: Williamstown & nearby suburbs
Expected Hours: Approx 8 hours per week worked Monday - Thursday 5-7pm during Victorian public school terms. Hours may vary depending on club requirements.
