Description

About West Harbour

West Harbour is one of Australia’s oldest rugby clubs, competing in the Shute Shield and representing Sydney’s Inner West with a proud history and strong community footprint. Our Board oversees the club’s strategy, governance and sustainability across men’s and women’s programs, Colts, juniors pathways, community, and commercial operations.

The Opportunity

We’re seeking Expressions of Interest from experienced professionals to join our Board with a specific brief to help lead Marketing & Events. You’ll guide brand and audience growth, partnerships, content and campaigns, and steward our major events calendar (season launch, match day experience, community & sponsor events, and fundraising initiatives). This is a volunteer governance role (non-executive) with a practical, hands-on edge in a community sport setting, suited to someone who enjoys turning strategy into action.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shape and oversee club-wide marketing strategy (brand, content, channels, seasonal campaigns).
  • Grow membership, attendance, and engagement, including digital and match-day activations.
  • Lead or support events strategy and delivery: planning, run-sheets, budgets, suppliers, volunteer coordination, and post-event review.
  • Strengthen commercial outcomes via sponsor servicing, partner integrations and event-led revenue opportunities.
  • Provide regular Board reporting (KPIs, budget tracking, risk & compliance for events).
  • Champion inclusive, community-first values consistent with West Harbour’s mission.

What You’ll Bring (Selection Criteria)

  • Demonstrated experience in marketing, brand, communications and/or events management, ideally with sport, entertainment or community organisations.
  • Practical capability delivering end-to-end events (from concept to bump-out) and measurable campaigns.
  • Data-informed approach to audience growth (email, social, web, CRM, ticketing or membership flows).
  • Strong stakeholder skills: sponsors, media, local government, suppliers, volunteers and fans.
  • Governance mindset: budgeting, risk, WHS for events, child-safe sport awareness.
  • A collaborative style and commitment to volunteer community sport.

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of club rugby or community sport
  • Inner West networks
  • Content production
  • Ticketing or membership platforms

Time Commitment

  • Board meetings: ~12 per year (evenings, at West Harbour Centre of Excellence, Concord).
  • Events cadence: Heavier during rugby season.
  • Tenure: Appointments made in line with the Club’s Constitution and Board vacancies.

Compliance

  • Appointment subject to standard Director due diligence and acceptance by the Board.
  • NSW RSA
  • NSW Working With Children Check (or willingness to obtain) and adherence to club policies (e.g. Code of Conduct).

What You’ll Get

  • A meaningful leadership role impacting a historic Sydney club and its community.
  • A platform to create standout match-day and partner experiences and grow a beloved local brand.
  • Expand your governance experience and network in Australian sport.
