About NSW Swifts

NSW SWIFTS OVERVIEW

One of the biggest names in club netball the world over, the NSW Swifts have a proud history in the Australian sporting landscape and have been at the pinnacle of the game for over 26 years.

Owned and operated by Netball NSW, some of the greatest players in netball history have worn the yellow and red uniforms of the Swifts. Those greats include Liz Ellis, Cath Cox, Laura Langman, Sharni Layton, Kim Green and Susan Pettitt.

A foundation club of Australia’s first national netball league, the Commonwealth Bank Trophy, the Sydney Swifts went on to claim four titles (2001, 2004, 2006, 2007) before the advent of the trans-Tasman ANZ Championship in 2008. The club then changed their yellow dresses for the red, white and blue of New South Wales, becoming the NSW Swifts.

The rebranded club went on to make all the state proud when they claimed the inaugural ANZ Championship title, and a three-peat in the process, with a famous Grand Final win over the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in Sydney.

Line-ups and coaches changed over the course of nine trans-Tasman seasons, but the Swifts continued to keep their standards of excellence to the optimum, reaching back-to-back Grand Finals in the final two years of the competition (2015 and 2016), and capturing the imagination of sports fans all over NSW and Australia.

In 2019, under the tutelage of former Premiership-winning player Briony Akle, the Swifts won their sixth title; a first in the era of Suncorp Super Netball which replaced the trans-Tasman competition in 2017.

In 2021 Akle led the Swifts to their seventh Premiership - and second title in three years - when they overcame local rivals in the first-ever all-NSW Grand Final.
