Description

The Western Force is a professional rugby union team based in Western Australia competing in the elite Super Rugby Pacific and Super W competitions.

As an organisation, the Force has a proud history, having been formed in 2004 and making its Super Rugby debut in 2006 at its original home, Subiaco Oval. Backed by Tattarang, the club operates at the highest level of sporting professionalism in Western Australia and has a strong presence nationally and internationally.

We are looking for expressions of interest for an Assistant Coach - Defence. The role will be responsible for delivering on key area of play to the Super Rugby Pacific team as well as support with team selection and player development. 

Coaching and Development

  • Leads the coaching strategies - including training plans, principles & mind-set for the coaching staff and players in one of the following areas
    • Defence system
  • Leads the development of appropriate defence game plan, unit/individual reviews and measures individual and team performance against these plans
  • Leads the preview of opposition team specific to defence game play
  • Leads technical and tactical coaching to individual players and units within the backs as appropriate
  • Assist the Head Coach to coordinate and deliver effective player communication
  • Engage in purposeful learning and development to enhance both personal and the teams development

Team Performance

  • To assist in campaign planning and delivery of the Super Rugby men’s programme as agreed with the Head Coach which includes the development and implementation of annual periodised coaching and training plans/models
  • Contribute to building and upholding the team identity and its associated values and behaviours incorporating those of the broader organisation
  • Together with the Head Coach, ensure collaboration between performance units is strong to promote continuous improvement which drives success
  • Fully utilise all available technologies (i.e. Analysts, GPS, etc.) to analyse, understand and develop individual and Team Defence performances
  • Remain up to date with modern game development, including new laws and their impact on the game
  • Together with the Head Coach and GM Rugby, actively play a role in player talent identification - including retention and recruitment

Management

  • To support the Head Coach with campaign preparation & management - selection plans, and a periodised coaching and training programme
  • To support the Head Coach on squad selection management
  • Lead personal & performance player & team management reviews and appraisal (includes providing off field development support) as needed
  • To support the Rugby Pathways Management (including Talent Identification & Recruitment processes)
  • Maintains positive and constructive Relationship Management the Rugby Australia (RA), Rugby Western Australia (RWA) and with other Coaches - including Wallabies and RA coaches

Essential Requirements

  • A minimum of five years’ experience in the provision and application of high-performance backs rugby coaching
  • Proven success in utilising backs game plan knowledge for planning and managing athletes across multiple seasons/campaigns to support winning performance
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the provision of backs game play either attack or defence in a high-performance rugby team.
  • Proven experience and commitment of working within a rugby environment with high performance coaches and players
  • Awareness of the contemporary issues relating to athletes and coaches within high performance sport and understanding of High-Performance rugby environments
  • Proven experience in using a holistic approach to planning and monitoring player performance in both team and individual players to achieve performance progression
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team as well as the ability to work independently. Possess a high level of personal initiative and autonomy
  • High level communication, planning and organisational skills
  • Proven personal and professional skills related to dealing with a variety of players, coaches, support staff and external relationships

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience with speaking in front of a rugby team and deliver key messages with confidence
