ABOUT MAKING WAVES FOUNDATION

MWF is a non-profit organisation that provides people with disability, or experiencing social challenges, opportunities to use sailing to further personal growth and potential.

The Making Waves headquarters in Sydney was established 28 years ago when a crew of sailors with disabilities competed in the 1994 Sydney to Hobart yacht race. The first Winds of Joy program was run a year later. Five different programs are now run to facilitate personal development and inclusion of people who may not usually be able to access sailing or the maritime industry.

ABOUT THE POSITION: CREW COORDINATOR

All the Making Waves crew are volunteers. Volunteers have the flexibility to schedule themselves onto program sails by putting their names down on the calendar in the events database.

The crew coordinator role is primarily to engage volunteers when there are not enough crew available for an upcoming sail, along with finding crew replacements if someone has to drop out of their spot.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor the roster (1 hr per week)
  • Contact volunteer pool via email, text, or phone when the roster isn’t full (1-2 hr per week)
  • Become familiar with the crew to understand their needs (ongoing approx. 1 hour per week)
  • Help organise sail training when needed (1 hr per month)
  • Update via email any notifications that need to be passed onto crew (1 hr per week)
  • Gather feedback from the crew (1hr per month)
  • Ensure initial online induction training is completed.

SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

  • People management skills and relationship development.
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Ability to think on your feet and find manageable solutions.
  • Polite, courteous, and compassionate communication style.
  • Experience working with people with disability is helpful but is not mandatory.
  • An ability to work with Microsoft Office, learn CRM systems, etc.
  • Experience in sailing is helpful but is not mandatory.
  • Able to work with rosters
