Description

Let’s be real...

This isn’t a sit-at-your-desk-all-day, check-your-emails kind of job.

It’s a hands-on, event-focused, people-powered role where you’ll be right in the middle of the action - making things happen, keeping things moving, solving problems as they pop up, and maybe even asking, “Where are the multitimers?” more than once.

We’re Capital Athletics, the peak body for athletics in the ACT and surrounds, and we’re building something special - creating opportunities for athletes of all ages and backgrounds, and delivering competitions that genuinely matter.

We’re a small, passionate team based at the University of Canberra. We keep things relaxed in tone but take our work seriously. We back each other, work hard, and have a bit of fun along the way. Right now, we’re looking for a Competition Coordinator to help us bring our event calendar to life.

So, what’s the job?

It’s a big one - but a good one.

You’ll be helping run the Capital Athletics competition calendar - meets, championships, school carnivals—everything from grassroots to elite. You’ll plan, prep, deliver, and adjust as needed.

  • Planning and prep? Absolutely.
  • Booking venues and sorting equipment? You bet.
  • Running events on the ground? Essential.
  • Working with volunteers who might not love change? Happens all the time.
  • Solving problems without fuss? That’s your thing.

You’ll also support schools in delivering athletics carnivals - helping students get a great first taste of the sport (or at least figure out which way to jump into the long jump pit).

A bit about you...

You don’t need a degree in sports science or a wall full of medals - but you do need:

  • A strong work ethic and a “let’s give it a go” mindset
  • Great organisational skills (bonus points if you like a colour-coded planner)
  • Clear, calm communication
  • Confidence to set boundaries and manage expectations
  • A willingness to learn from experienced folks - even when they’re a bit set in their ways
  • Some experience in sport, events or logistics - even as a volunteer, athlete, team manager or club admin

This role would suit someone looking to bring life experience into a new space. Maybe you're a parent with older kids, a new grad, a former or current athlete, or just someone who wants to contribute to something meaningful.

Important to note:

  • This isn’t a remote role - you’ll need to be based in Canberra and on the ground at events.
  • We’re open to all kinds of structures - job share, part-time, flexible arrangements - if you’re the right fit, we’ll make it work.
  • Some weekend and after-hours work is part of the deal (usually 1-2 events/month), but we have a proper time-in-lieu system to keep things balanced.

Why you’ll love working with us:

  • Real impact - You’ll see the results of your work every single day
  • Supportive team - We look out for each other and keep egos in check
  • Purposeful sport - We’re here to create something awesome, not just keep the lights on
  • No office politics - Just good people doing good work

Essential Requirements

  • First Aid Certificate
  • National Police / Criminal History Check
  • Working with Children / Working with Vulnerable People Check
  • Drivers Licence
