20-40-60
In May 2016 both Sportspeople and Sportspeople’s founder Robert McMurtrie celebrate some important milestones. In this short article Robert tells us more…
20 years ago this month Sportspeople was appointed to work on our very first recruitment assignment. I had just turned 40 years old at the time. My iPhone tells me I’m 60 this month.
It would be easy to say the last 20 years has been easy, but the truth is it has not. Starting a new business is difficult. Has been and always will be. Otherwise everyone would do it. Making the business successful and standing the test of time is even harder. Reaching a 20 year milestone is something I am very proud of.
As a ‘first in market’ provider we had the added complexity of introducing the Australian sport market to the new concept of using a recruitment service to find staff. With the benefit of hindsight I’m sure I underestimated how long this education would take. In many ways we are still on this journey.
Over the 20 years we have filled so many roles I have simply lost count. Certainly over 2,500 retained recruitment assignments. That’s not including large scale events and team builds where we’ve assisted in appointing upwards to 230 staff in the one process. I can say with absolute confidence Sportspeople has filled more roles than any other recruitment agency specialising in the sport, aquatic & fitness sector. Anywhere. For my part I’ve had the absolute privilege of meeting and interviewing over 6,000 candidates.
Much has changed over these past 20 years, not only the types of jobs in the sector but the way people search and find jobs. Sportspeople has adapted along the way to stay current and on-trend. We never set out to be the biggest and we only commit our energy to being the best.
The Sportspeople Jobs Market, launched in 1999, was another Sportspeople innovation designed specifically to bring employers and job seekers together online. At the time print media controlled the positions vacant market, with newspapers literally bursting with job advertisements. And to provide some context it’s important to remember SEEK was launched in 1998 only months before the Sportspeople Jobs Market. In 2016 online dominates the way we search and find jobs. The Sportspeople reach is now 100+ countries with over 2.7million visitors to our website last year alone. Since 1999 the Sportspeople Jobs Market has assisted over 60,000 people find work.
Our growth has been controlled, measured and deliberate. Our recruitment offering has adapted to suit market. To help and guide employers through the recruitment process we now have a dedicated and highly skilled team of Global Recruitment Consultants throughout Australia and New Zealand. They listen, provide advice and outline a range of recruitment options able to be customised exactly to suit timelines, budget and scale. And we do this in the Sportspeople way.
Since the 2008/09 GFC turmoil Sportspeople has recorded consecutive years of growth in all our primary metrics. This includes recruitment assignments, job advertisements, website visits, social media and revenue. These are all the things that underpin our business and assist us in servicing job seekers and employers each and every day.
No journey is travelled alone and I have been extremely fortunate to work alongside a team that values the Sportspeople brand as much as I do. Angelique Lele, Sportspeople’s Operations Manager has played a significant long term role in everything we do and deserves a very special mention and thanks. Our Global Recruitment Team of Ros Holding, Karen Good, Glee Mitchell, Anne Reid and Leeanne Grantham is as good as it can get and the best it has ever been. Our online team of Angus Bowen, Eugene O’Brien and Dave Clayton keep the servers running while Joanne Cohen ensures our accounts are up to date and our customers are happy. To the others that have come and gone along the way, I’d also like to say thank you.
Owning and running a business is not a 9-5 job and I want to say a special thanks to my family for their patience, support and love over these past 20 years. Allison has played a large role in the evolution of Sportspeople providing her guidance and ideas, listening and keeping me motivated when things didn’t go to plan. Which, for the record, was often! Our children, Gabby and Lachlan have each contributed to Sportspeople along the way, including working in the business. As young children they inspired us to be successful and as adults they have shown us the decisions of the past 20 years have been right for our family.
Everything we do at Sportspeople is designed to assist job seekers and employers. To everyone and anyone we’ve come in to contact these past 20 years, thank you for supporting us. I hope we can continue to assist you in the years ahead.

Acknowledging unsuccessful applications - a simple courtesy and smart brand management
Way back in our September 2013 e-news our article “The importance of acknowledging unsuccessful applications” generated a significant amount of discussion from job seekers and employers alike.
What was clearly evident from this banter is the frustration a job seeker faces when their application is either not acknowledged or they are simply are not advised of the outcome. Job seekers have also expressed their disappointment at the statement “only successful candidates will be contacted” seen in some job advertisements, which in our view at least, is both discourteous and lazy.
A few small steps can ensure you treat each candidate with care and respect.
- Firstly, acknowledging receipt of the application (even via a simple auto-responder) can give the candidate piece of mind their application has been received, and also saves them from a follow up phone call to check.
- Secondly, ensure you remove any advertising for roles once they've been filled to save candidates from unnecessarily applying.
- Thirdly, notify candidates as quickly as possible when his or her application is unsuccessful, ensuring you thank the candidate for taking the time to apply and for their interest in the role.
- Finally, if a candidate asks for specific feedback, be honest as to where they were lacking compared to the successful candidate and what you feel they can do to improve their chances of securing a similar role in the future.
Regardless of the outcome of his or her application, these small steps will ensure each candidate can take away a positive image of both the employer and the recruitment process.
That’s why, when our Recruitment team often receives e-mails such as this one from an unsuccessful candidate, we know we must be doing something right...
“I would like to say how nice it is to actually receive a ’Thanks but no thanks’ note … a rarity these days … and all the more special to have one so nicely phrased !!! If I am to receive more of these in the weeks to follow, long may they all share the same message. So, thanks again.”
We are all pressed for time, however the investment of responding to each and every applicant will make a world of difference in terms of your brand as an employer.

FREE Job Board service for State and National Sporting Organisations
In July 2009, Sportspeople developed new categories of Community Sport Club, Volunteer and Intern/Traineeships to sit alongside the salaried, professional career opportunities at the Sportspeople Jobs Market. Following the success of these FREE listings, Sportspeople created a Job Board service for State and National Sporting Organisations in 2010, essentially replacing the “employment opportunities” or "jobs" link at an organisation’s website.
Sportspeople can provide a sport specific Job Board to any State and National Sporting Organisation, “powered by” Sportspeople, showing all positions available in the relevant sport. And, best of all, jobs can then be listed by each member club/association directly, meaning your staff no longer have to manage email listings and purge expired jobs. Importantly, Community Sport Clubs can list positions on these job boards FREE of charge. Please note, charges will still apply for State and National Sporting Organisations or jobs that do not fit the Community Sport Club, Volunteer and Intern/Traineeships categories.
As jobs are posted using the Sportspeople Jobs Market fields, each includes comprehensive information about the job, logo(s), How to Apply, close date, contact details and consistent, professional formatting. Jobs automatically purge upon the close date.
The end result is that State or the National Sporting Organisation and their members have an up to date and comprehensive listing of relevant jobs available online, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. And, as an added bonus, each job also appears at the Sportspeople Jobs Market reaching an audience of over 2.7million visitors a year.
Sportspeople presently “powers” over 30 Job Boards throughout Australia and New Zealand including AUSTSWIM and a number of organisations including:
It is easy to commission Sportspeople to host a Job Board. If you are an existing advertiser we can set up an active Job Board within 24 hours of receiving authority. The set up and ongoing maintenance of the Job Board is FREE.
