Short DescriptionThis course will equip candidates with the skills and knowledge required to supervise swimming pool users and to safely use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an emergency situation. The course focus includes pool surveillance, scanning techniques, rescue skills, oxygen resuscitation and emergency care.

Detailed Description

This program covers topics such as emergency rescue techniques, swimming skills and basic spinal management techniques as well as the finer points of pool lifeguarding. The defibrillator update focus includes cardiac rhythms, action of the heart and the safe storage / use of an AED unit.

Candidates of this program will receive comprehensive training in:

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes update);
  • Aquatic emergency care;
  • Basic first aid;
  • Emergency management;
  • Oxygen resuscitation;
  • Introductory pool operations; and
  • Operate a semi-automatic defibrillator.

Physical Requirements:

  • Tow unconscious patient 10m to an appropriate area for primary assessment using a contact tow
  • Without assistance, retrieve an object from the deepest part of the aquatic environment (no deeper than 3.0M)
  • Swim 25m, recover patient, use a non-contact tow a further 25m before landing & securing concious patient in under 1min 45 sec 
  • Without using equipment swim 200m in under 6min (any stroke) 
  • Perform a 10m wade rescue keeping patient mouth and nose above the water

Course outcome:

Successful completion of this course will result in the award of:

SISSS00111 Pool Lifeguard

Units of competency gained from this course are:

  • SISCAQU002 - Perform basic water rescues
  • SISCAQU006 - Supervise clients in aquatic locations
  • SISCAQU007 - Perform advanced water rescues
  • PUAEME001B - Provide emergency care
  • PUAEME003C - Administer oxygen in an emergency situation
  • PUAOPE010C - Operate an automated external defibrillator in an emergency
  • HLTAID003 - Provide first aid (Issued as a Credit Transfer)
  • HLTAID001 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation


Candidate must hold the following unit of competency:

  • HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid certificate
