Basketball Queensland is seeking a passionate, experienced and forward-thinking Technical Officials Education & Development Manager to lead the education, development and support of referees and technical officials across Queensland.

This is a key leadership role within Basketball Queensland’s basketball operations structure, responsible for driving the growth, quality and sustainability of technical officials across the state. The successful applicant will play an important role in strengthening referee and technical official pathways, supporting associations, improving education and accreditation outcomes, and creating positive development environments for officials at all levels of the game.

As basketball continues to grow across Queensland, the development of high-quality officials is critical to supporting competitions, representative programs, state events and the broader participant experience. This role provides an exciting opportunity to shape the future of officiating in Queensland by building systems, programs and relationships that support officials to learn, develop, progress and remain engaged in the sport.

Reporting to the GM - Performance, Pathways & Development at Basketball Queensland, the Technical Officials Education & Development Manager will work closely with associations, competition staff, referee coaches, educators, officials, Basketball Australia and other key stakeholders to ensure the technical officials space is well supported, aligned and continuously improving.

About the role

The Technical Officials Education & Development Manager will be responsible for leading and coordinating the delivery of education, development and pathway initiatives for referees and technical officials across Queensland.

The role will have a strong focus on developing officials through structured education, accreditation, mentoring, coaching and progression opportunities. It will also support the delivery of Basketball Queensland competitions and events by ensuring technical officials are appropriately educated, supported and connected to broader development opportunities.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the development, coordination and delivery of technical officials education and development programs across Queensland.
  • Drive referee and technical official pathway initiatives that support recruitment, retention, progression and performance.
  • Lead and support the National Referee Program and other relevant referee development programs.
  • Develop and implement education resources, training opportunities and support structures for officials, referee coaches and educators.
  • Support accreditation processes and maintain strong records of official development, qualifications and progression.
  • Work with associations to build local capability and improve the consistency of referee and technical official education across Queensland.
  • Support Basketball Queensland competitions and events through education, development and technical official support initiatives.
  • Deliver and coordinate referee education at key events, including State Championships and Day 0 education sessions.
  • Support the ongoing development and delivery of behavioural framework education to improve game-day environments.
  • Work collaboratively with the competitions team to ensure officials are supported within Basketball Queensland competitions and events.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and support to referee coaches, educators and officials involved in development programs.
  • Build strong relationships with associations, Basketball Australia, internal staff and other key stakeholders.
  • Monitor program outcomes, maintain accurate reporting, and contribute to KPI tracking and continuous improvement.
  • Identify opportunities to improve systems, resources, communication and support for officials across Queensland.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive and development-focused culture for technical officials at all levels.

You will bring a collaborative approach, strong organisational skills and the ability to work across multiple programs, stakeholders and priorities. You will be confident engaging with associations, educators, officials, internal staff and external partners, and you will be able to balance strategic thinking with practical delivery.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally bring:

  • Experience in referee, technical official, coach, education or pathway development.
  • A strong understanding of basketball competitions, officiating environments and development pathways.
  • Experience delivering education, training, mentoring or development programs.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with associations, staff, volunteers and officials.
  • Good organisational, planning and administrative skills.
  • Confidence in managing records, reporting, program outcomes and continuous improvement.
  • A positive and solutions-focused approach to supporting people and programs.
  • A commitment to child safety, inclusion and positive sporting environments.
