The Participation & Engagement Manager is responsible for assisting the Chief Executive Officer in managing and directing the operations, policies and communications of Hockey ACT, to ensure effective use of resources and optimise participation, inclusion and the development of the sport of hockey in the ACT. The Participation & Engagement Manager will play a key role in ensuring that Hockey ACT delivers the highest possible standard of service delivery to members. The role also has operational responsibilities for the Canberra Chill and works directly with the Chill High Performance Manager to ensure the teams logistical operations are undertaken to a high standard. They must be able to manage staff effectively and guide staff to ensure that Hockey ACT’s strategic direction is achieved.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the CEO in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the organisation and office administration, including the direct management and supervision of seven staff members.
- Assist the CEO in the preparation of Hockey ACT Board meeting papers and minutes.
- In the absence of the CEO, assist the Finance Manager with routine payment approvals and financial administration processes in accordance with delegated authority.
- In conjunction with the CEO, manage staff to help the organisation achieve its Strategic objectives.
- Work with clubs and members to ensure ongoing sustainability of programs and ensure the ongoing financial sustainability of Hockey ACT’s member clubs.
- Coordinate and ensure appropriate processes and procedures are followed for all Hockey ACT disciplinary tribunals, complaints, appeals and integrity matters, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and governance requirements.
- Support organisational governance through the development, review and implementation of Hockey ACT policies, procedures and governance frameworks to ensure compliance, best practice and continuous organisational improvement.
- Identify, recommend and implement initiatives that improve the standard of Hockey ACT competitions and member experience.
- Manage organisational communications to members, stakeholders and the general public, including oversight of the development and implementation of the Hockey ACT Communications Plan.
- Oversee the coordination and administration of the Canberra Chill program, including business operations and communications relating to sales, sponsorship, memberships, ticketing and events.
- Develop understanding, awareness and procedures for greater inclusion and participation opportunities within the ACT and its surrounds. Including but not limited to; LGBTQI+ inclusion, gender equity, all abilities, CALD groups, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups.
KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in the sporting industry or similar management position.
- Tertiary education or relevant industry experience in a relevant field e.g. Sports Management, Communications.
- Excellent communication, presentation and conflict management skills.
- Excellent organisational skills.
- High level of enthusiasm with a positive and proactive approach.
- Experience managing tasks across a number of different areas.
- Ability to independently manage own workload and the workload of three staff.
- Flexibility to work weekends and evenings as required.
- Valid Driver’s Licence.
- Current or a willingness to obtain an ACT Working with Vulnerable Persons check.
Desirable
- Prior Event Management/Coordination experience.
- Completed Member Protection Information Officer Training.
- Valid First Aid Certificate or Sports Trainers Qualification.
- Sound knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.
- A working knowledge of the sport of hockey.
- Understanding of communication, marketing and basic design principles.
- Hockey Australia recognised Level 1 Coaching Accreditation or willingness to work towards this qualification

Hockey ACT (HACT) is the not-for-profit state sporting organisation responsible for the development, governance, promotion and delivery of hockey programs within the ACT. HACT comprises of 22 member clubs and owns and operates two facilities The National Hockey Centre at Lyneham and Tuggeranong Hockey Park, Greenway.
