Catering to over 6,500 members, the Association offers a variety of basketball programs to players of all ages and abilities. Position Summary
The Referee Educator is responsible for developing, training, and supporting basketball referees to ensure high standards of officiating. This role focuses on delivering education programs, mentoring officials, and promoting consistent interpretation and application of the rules of basketball. This Primary/Senior Educator plays a key role in referee development pathways and helps improve the overall quality of officiating within the organisation.
This is a part time or casual position.
This role reports to our Officials Manager and General Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Education & Training
- Design, deliver, and evaluate referee education programs, clinics, and workshops.
- Provide instruction on basketball rules, mechanics, positioning, game management, and professionalism.
- Develop educational resources including presentations, videos, and assessment tools.
- Facilitate entry-level referee courses and ongoing professional development sessions.
Mentoring & Development
- Observe referees during games and provide constructive feedback and performance evaluations.
- Mentor new and developing referees through structured development pathways.
- Identify talented referees and support their progression to higher levels of competition.
Assessment & Standards
- Conduct referee assessments and maintain evaluation records.
- Ensure officials apply rules and mechanics consistently across competitions.
- Support the implementation of officiating standards and best practices.
Collaboration
- Work closely with referee coordinators, competition managers, and governing bodies.
- Assist with referee recruitment and retention initiatives.
- Contribute to strategic planning for officiating development programs.
Administration
- Maintain records of education sessions, attendance, and referee progress.
- Assist in scheduling education sessions and development activities.
- Ensure compliance with organisational policies and officiating guidelines.
Key Skills & Qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of basketball rules and officiating mechanics.
- Experience as a basketball referee (preferably at an advanced or accredited level).
- Strong teaching, mentoring, and communication skills.
- Ability to evaluate performance and provide constructive feedback.
- Experience delivering training sessions, workshops, or educational programs.
- Strong organisational and administrative skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Accredited referee instructor or educator certification.
- Experience in referee coaching or assessor roles.
- Background in sport education, coaching, or training.
- Familiarity with referee development pathways within Basketball Australia.
