The Community Engagement & Junior Development Coach plays a central role in growing grassroots basketball across Cairns and surrounding regions. The position focuses on delivering high-quality school programs, introductory clinics, and junior development sessions that spark interest, build fundamental skills, and support the transition of young participants into Cairns Basketball programs and competitions.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Increasing Grassroots Engagement
Lead the design, planning, and delivery of grassroots basketball programs throughout Cairns and surrounding communities.
Deliver engaging introductory clinics, school/afterschool programs, and community sessions that align with the Australian Curriculum to help get a strong foot hold in local schools.
Build and maintain strong relationships with schools, community organisations, and local clubs to expand program reach and participant engagement.
Ensure a clear, simple pathway is communicated to families so that participants understand their next step (e.g., Mini Dolphins -> Mini Marlins -> U10 -> Competitions).
Set and work toward annual participation and registration growth targets, including:
growth in school program numbers
increased transition from schools to development programs
increased junior competition registrations
increased retention from one program level to the next
Player Development
Plan and deliver junior skill development sessions with an emphasis on fundamental skills, game awareness, and enjoyment.
Create curriculum-linked lesson plans and structured session plans that reflect age-appropriate learning outcomes.
Promote and maintain clear development pathways from grassroots to representative levels.
Increasing Community Engagement
Coordinate, deliver, and promote community-based engagement events that enhance Cairns Basketball’s visibility and connection to families and grassroots participants.
Represent Cairns Basketball professionally at schools, community events, club visits, and public programs.
Deliver inclusive community basketball programs designed to engage children of all ages and backgrounds.
Internal Collaboration & Administration
Work closely with the Competitions Manager to transition school and community program participants into Cairns Basketball competitions.
Collect, maintain and report participation data to support program evaluation, funding opportunities and continuous improvement.
Ensure all BQ program and selection correspondence is communicated to all parties efficiently including promotion to CBI members.
