The Role
Reporting to the Australian Sailing (AS) High Performance (HP) Pathways Manager, the Performance Pathways Coach will be responsible for delivery and support of on-water coaching for the Victorian (VIC) State Sailing Performance Program (SSPP). This is a part-time (0.5 FTE) position based at the Australian Sailing Victoria Office. The Royal Brighton Yacht Club (RBYC) will serve as the primary training base for the VIC SSPP.
This role involves working closely with AS Performance Pathways and AS HP program staff through to community/club services staff to ensure alignment and integration across all stages of the athlete pathway. Some after hours and weekend work, as well as regional and interstate travel will be required.
Principle Accountabilities
In alignment with the VIC Sailing program objectives, the primary responsibilities of the Performance Pathways Coach (VIC) include:
- Providing on water coaching for VIC identified/categorised athletes in the local training environment, scheduled training camps and at major state and national regattas.
- Driving and monitoring the development of Pre-Emerging sailors via talent ID and direct coaching at association/AS Youth events and Sail Our Way coaching and other initiatives e.g. Green & Gold, Youfor2032, etc.
- Support Futures Squad activities, including domestic camps and international regattas as agreed with AS HP Pathways Manager.
- Attending and actively participating in identified sailing initiatives across the state to aid coach development with the underpinning club and association networks.
- Creating and actioning an annual plan of engagement including regattas and camps (to be agreed with the AS HP Pathways Manager).
- Ensuring any categorised athletes in VIC have IDPs/Campaign Plans and are receiving the support they require to enable them to optimise their rate of development and liaise with the AS HP Pathways Manager to ensure they get opportunities to engage with other National Institute Network (NIN) or National Squad environments.
- In conjunction with the VIC performance support staff, contribute to individual development planning and monitoring process for athletes in VIC.
- Working with relevant AS staff to produce and action your own development planning that may involve a range of stakeholders, within VIC and the NIN.
- Undertaking administrative responsibilities, including season, session and regatta planning and review processes, as well as regular progress meetings.
- Managing contracted coaches within VIC, as agreed with the AS HP Pathways Manager.
- Undertaking required logistics for the team at camps and events around your own coaching needs.
- Maintaining any allocated coach boat, trailer and any other required equipment for your own use and remain accountable for its servicing.
- Reading, understanding and adhering to the relevant AS policies and processes while operating within the environments and reporting any breaches to the relevant bodies.
- Participating in regular AS Performance Pathway team meetings via video conference and/or in person, where required.
- Demonstrating collaborative behaviours, professional standards and effective communication.
- Engaging with local pathways class associations/clubs and seek to build performance culture and regular training ethos.
- Adhering to the AS R.I.T.E. values and behaviours.
Sail Our Way: Role and Responsibilities (up to 0.1 FTE)
Under the leadership of the National Participation Manager, this role is responsible for delivering components of the Australian Sailing ‘Sail Our Way’ (SOW) Project to identified partner clubs and associations. The aim is to support the achievement of Sailing 2032 success measures for female participation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with Grow, Support and Performance Pathways staff to deliver coach development clinics at events such as Youth Sail, and targeted state-based activities.
- Supporting the enhancement of SOW partner club and class coaching programs by fostering coach networks, developing coaching initiatives, and building workforce capability, with a focus on increasing female participation through targeted training, development, and mentoring.
- Contributing to the delivery of high-quality programs and experiences that benefit all participants, ensuring broader improvements in coaching and program delivery.
While the primary focus is on empowering females within the sailing community, the role’s outcomes will contribute to a stronger, more inclusive workforce and improved participant experiences across the sport.

Attributes
Qualifications & Experience
- A good understanding of international best practice in sailing performance pathway frameworks.
- A good understanding of coaching pedagogy and how coaching behaviour and practice drives skill acquisition and athlete development.
- Knowledge of the key components of a HP sport environment and culture.
- Good understanding of effective process.
- Appropriate industry accreditation and qualifications (Australian Sailing Coach Qualification), including driving and boat licences, first aid, and VIC Working with Children Clearances.
Desirable:
- Experience in supporting or leading groups.
- Knowledge of what it takes to win medals at Olympics and World Championships.
- Knowledge of the Australian sport structure and environment.
