The Opportunity
Reporting to the National Performance Director, the National Beach Volleyball Head Technical Coach will provide world class technical and coaching leadership to the National Beach Volleyball Program. The role will lead the planning and delivery of training and competition plans, including the development of technical skills, tactical awareness, physical and mental capacities and coach development to underpin preparation and performance of VA’s teams for key international events (e.g. Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, World Tour and Asian Championships).
This is a pivotal leadership role within Australia’s high-performance system, responsible for driving podium-capable standards and shaping the future of Australian Beach Volleyball on the world stage.
Key Responsibilities (drawn directly from the Position Description)
- The National Beach Volleyball Head Technical Coach leads the national program’s technical and tactical direction, setting and driving standards that support podium capable performances at benchmark and other priority international events. They build a clear, athlete centred performance plan across training, competition, and campaign phases, and ensure daily coaching practice consistently reinforces the program’s performance model.
- The role creates an effective learning environment by aligning coaches and athletes on modern teaching methods, clear tactical frameworks, and the evolving demands of international beach volleyball. This includes leading and developing the coaching team in the daily performance environment, lifting coaching craft, feedback quality, and consistent application of program standards across central and aligned delivery settings.
- The Head Technical Coach ensures decisions are evidence led and timely. They set the questions, standards, and cadence for performance analysis and monitoring, covering match and training capture, coding, analysis, and feedback loops, plus benchmarking and future performance modelling. They translate data and game trends into practical plans for learning design, competition preparation, and in match performance moments, ensuring the right information reaches athletes and coaches at the right time.
- Working with performance support staff, the Head Technical Coach drives integration of key performance information into daily practice and campaign delivery, including agreed athlete monitoring and reporting routines. They ensure performance insights are centralised, actionable, and used to adjust plans without losing clarity, cohesion, or athlete buy in.
- In partnership with the National Performance Director and high-performance leadership, the Head Technical Coach contributes to campaign planning and delivery for benchmark events, ensuring technical, tactical, physical, and mental preparation plans are aligned to the VA High Performance Strategic Plan and to relevant Games and major event requirements.
- The Head Technical Coach supports operational readiness for training and competition by working closely with operations staff. They ensure coaching requirements are well defined and executed, including oversight of athlete entries, eligibility considerations, and key deadlines for international events, and ensuring Games related documentation and processes are completed accurately and on time in partnership with the National Performance Director and operations leads.
- They build and sustain productive relationships that strengthen program delivery and pathway alignment, including with State Associations, international federations and stakeholders, and key performance partners such as AIS, SASI, QAS, and other aligned institutes and service providers.
- They provide clear, high quality written and verbal communications that support decision making and transparency across the Board, management, athletes, coaches, and stakeholders, and they represent Volleyball Australia professionally in Australia and internationally to reinforce credibility, trust, and high-performance reputation.
- They lead talent understanding for the discipline by maintaining a current, evidence informed athlete profile and attribute framework that supports talent identification, selection conversations, and individual development planning for future international level athletes.
- They actively role model and uphold a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment, meeting legislative and policy requirements and reinforcing expected standards of behaviour across the program.
- They contribute to national coaching capability by participating in agreed coach education and staff development initiatives (including VA, AIS and institute partners), while also maintaining their own professional development to stay current with the international game and best practice high performance coaching.
