About the role
- Player Health & Injury Management: Oversee injury prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; advise on injury prognosis and performance impact; collaborate on rehabilitation plans; ensure player health and regulatory compliance.
- Medical Coverage: Provide medical care at weekend matches (Victoria and interstate) and one evening training per week; manage emergencies; conduct player assessments; provide on-call support.
- Advisory Role: Advise coaches, players, and staff on injury impact, prevention, and overall health, including nutrition and mental well-being.
- Compliance with Regulations: Ensure compliance with AFL rules, anti-doping, and medical ethics; maintain confidential and accurate medical records.
- Multi-disciplinary Collaboration: Work with physiotherapists, performance teams, and AFL medical staff to monitor player health and provide updates on fitness, return to play and injury status.
- Professional Development: Stay updated with the latest sports medicine practices.
About you
- Strong Communication: Effectively convey medical information to athletes, coaches, and staff, fostering trust and understanding.
- Quick Decision-Making: Make informed, timely decisions in high-pressure situations, particularly during game day injuries or emergencies.
- Team Collaboration: Work seamlessly with other medical professionals, coaches, and performance staff to support player health and recovery.
- Empathy and Compassion: Show understanding and support for players' emotional and physical challenges particularly during recovery.
- Resilience and Stress Management: Remain calm and effective under pressure, especially in fast-paced or emergency situations.
- Commitment to Continuous Learning: Stay updated on the latest research and developments in sports medicine to provide the best care.
What you need
- Medical degree and current, unrestricted registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Postgraduate experience in sports medicine or the management of sports injuries within elite sporting environments is preferred, however not mandatory.
- Strong knowledge of AFL/VFL medical protocols, anti-doping regulations, and concussion management guidelines.
- Current driver’s licence.
- Current Working with Children Check.
- Current medial indemnity insurance.
