Description

INTRODUCTION

The Sherbrooke Suns Basketball Club welcomes volunteer coaching applications for the upcoming Victorian Junior Basketball League VJBL 2025/26 season, to be played from October 2025 until September 2026. The club is entering an exciting new phase as it launches a unified development pathway for all junior players and teams. This initiative aims to provide a consistent and progressive structure from U12s through to senior representative basketball.

DEVELOPMENT SQUADS

Each age group will operate as a development squad, with all players and teams working within that umbrella. This structure ensures every player has the opportunity to progressively develop their skills according to age and experience.

Coaches will be expected to collaborate in delivering a unified training and game environment aligned with the club’s Style of Play development guide. Applicants should demonstrate a strong understanding of basketball principles and be capable of effectively translating them into training and game settings appropriate to their assigned age group.

SHERBROOKE SUNS STYLE OF PLAY

The Sherbrooke Suns Style of Play will guide each coach and squad along a clear player development trajectory, with a strong focus on:

  • Individual fundamental development
  • Read & React motion offence
  • Man-to-man defensive principles

TRAINING COMMITMENTS

Each team will train twice per week - once on Sundays and once midweek (expected to be Wednesdays for all teams) at Upwey High School. Sessions will utilize full courts and provide a consistent developmental platform under the guidance of the Director of Coaching, Coaching Coordinators, and Age Group Head Coaches. Coaches must be consistently available and are encouraged to support other teams where possible.

COACHING ROLES

To support the club’s aspiration of creating a cohesive, collaborative, and unified environment that nurtures player development, the Sherbrooke Suns are offering a variety of coaching roles. These roles span both leadership and team-based responsibilities.

Led by Director of Coaching Jason Weidemann, the club invites applications for the following roles:

Leadership Coaching Roles

Coaching Coordinators:
These roles act as second-in-charge (2IC) to the Director of Coaching, supporting the overall implementation of the club’s development pathway. Responsibilities include involvement in player selection, coach appointments, development frameworks, and conflict resolution. The club seeks to appoint Coordinators in the following areas:

  • Junior Girls (U12–U18)
  • Junior Boys (U12–U14)
  • Junior Boys (U16–U18)

Age Group Head Coaches:
Typically serving as the Head Coach of the first team in each age group, but not exclusively, this role acts as the subject matter expert for their group. They are responsible for overseeing training programs and ensuring alignment with the club’s Style of Play. The Age Group Head Coach ensures all players receive high-quality development opportunities throughout the season.

Team Coaching Roles

Team Coaches:
Responsible for leading individual teams, Team Coaches mentor players and implement development plans in line with the club's Style of Play. They are expected to foster collaboration with Age Group Head Coaches and fellow coaches, and create a cohesive environment for all players.

Assistant Coaches:
Support the Team Coach during games and training, assisting with player and team development, and ensuring consistency across the program.

Applicants may apply for one or multiple roles depending on their interest, experience, and capacity to meet the expectations outlined.
