ABOUT THE ROLE:

Reporting to the Legal & Regulatory Services Manager, you will play a crucial role in helping SAPA to deliver high-quality commercial legal, regulatory, governance and integrity services for several sporting and entertainment organisations.

You will be a key contributor in ensuring that tasks are provided to schedule, objectives are met and the expectations of our clients are exceeded.

Specifically, your role will primarily include assisting in the following areas:

  • Advising on and drafting of various commercial licences and contracts including media rights agreements, sponsorship agreements and supplier agreements;
  • Advising on various intellectual property related issues with respect to sponsor, league, club and athlete-owned rights, including ensuring appropriate protections under trade mark registration and contract;
  • Advising on and preparing documentation regarding the sale and/ or transfer of league or club ownership including with respect to the due diligence process, term sheets, club participation agreements and shareholder agreements;
  • Advising on and drafting rules and regulations, rules and policies for different SAPA clients, including in AFL, football and basketball;
  • Developing a thorough understanding and advising on integrity-related policies and procedures, including code of conduct, member and child protection and disciplinary matters;
  • Advising on tribunal and appeals processes, pursuant to the relevant regulations including (for example) written submissions, breach notices, hearing notices and suspension letters;
  • Advising on governance matters including best practice governance standards, and rights and obligations under constitutions and other related documents;
  • Drafting player transfer agreements, player termination deeds and player contracts;
  • Assisting and advising on collective bargaining negotiations and related matters; 
  • Advising on general employment law related issues including employment agreements;
  • Drafting and preparing communications and legal advice to clients;
  • Providing general assistance on policy reviews and strategic projects across a range of clients in different sports, including AFL, football and basketball;
  • Conducting ad-hoc research on legal, regulatory or commercial issues and frameworks.

Further to this, you will also:

  • Take and clarify client instructions;
  • Support the Legal & Regulatory Services Manager, GM – Legal & Integrity, and Executive Directors with strategic planning;
  • Provide general legal, regulatory and administrative support as required;
  • Help shape and drive the culture of our team.

Essential Requirements

  • HSC/VCE equivalent
  • National Police / Criminal History Check
  • Law Degree (or equivalent)
