Basketball Australia is the governing and controlling body for the sport of basketball in Australia. A not-for-profit business, Basketball Australia’s members are the eight state and territory basketball associations who we work closely with to grow the sport.
Basketball Australia manages our elite national teams (Boomers & Opals, Rollers & Gliders plus men’s and women’s 3x3), our Centre of Excellence facility, elite competitions including Australia’s longest running women’s competition, the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL), major international competitions, annual national junior championship events as well as Australian basketball’s official junior game development program and other national programs and events.
Basketball is an Olympic and Paralympic sport and shares one of the highest international sporting profiles with the sport also ranked as the second most popular team sport in Australia with over 1 million people playing the game. Basketball Australia manages 22 national teams which compete in Olympic and Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games and FIBA World Championships.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Basketball Australia is seeking to appoint a Communications Manager to deliver the growth objectives of our new strategic plan. The role will manage all internal and external communications of the organisation across multiple platforms and manage all media relationships. The role will require management of multiple stakeholders as the sport undergoes significant change. Critical to the role is ownership of the content plan and increasing the profile of basketball as the sport of choice for all Australians.
This role sits within the Marketing, Communications and Digital team and will require travel to events and weekend work.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Reporting to the Executive General Manager, Marketing, Communications and Digital, the role will work within a team that is responsible for overseeing the following:
- Helping to drive growth and exposure for the sport focused on the following areas:
- National Participation Programs including Aussie Hoops.
- Integration of commercial partnerships into marketing activities and support for the commercial team to sell sponsorship assets.
- Marketing of high profile events and activities including the management of ticketing activities.
- National Teams (Boomers, Opals, Gliders and Rollers)
- WNBL and other competitions
- Leading the strategy and delivery of social media, publicity, media relations and events activities
- Monitoring all media channels and providing reports for key stakeholders
- Support crisis communications
- Content production to support communications through digital, print and video assets.
- Development of content plans to support marketing and communication activities across the business. These plans will include public relations activities as well as traditional marketing and communications activities.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
You have a can-do attitude and a creative mindset with a thorough knowledge of the sport media landscape. You are a seasoned media professional with exceptional presentation skills, high-level expertise in the identification of PR opportunities, plus a track record building and navigating valuable media relationships and networks. A strategic knowledge of social media platforms and delivery including experience developing and implementing cross-channel content plans across media and social media channels
Videography, photography & photo editing skills are highly-desirable, along with experience in website maintenance, digital marketing platforms (i.e., Mail Chimp). Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of digital and social media channels, including analytics and developing engaging content, is a must.
A degree in journalism, communications or public relations is mandatory.
