Rugby is the national sport of Samoa, occupying a special place in the Samoan psyche and is enjoyed at all levels by men, women, boys and girls of all ages. Samoans are passionate about rugby and support for the game is widespread.

The primary purpose of this role is to provide leadership, direction and coaching for the Manu Samoa team to ensure optimal team performance and development to achieve team objectives and performance standards.

The role of the Manu Samoa Head Coach is critical to the achievement of Samoa Rugby’s overall vision and goals. After the 2019 World Cup, we are looking to re-build for 2023 and beyond. Based on a clear understanding of where we are at now, we seek to re-set foundations, harness our strengths, leverage emerging opportunities, innovate, consolidate and forge new partnerships so we not only survive but can thrive in the rugby world of today and tomorrow. Manu Samoa Rugby is seeking a Head Coach and leader that will play a game-changer role, be an integral part of planning, systems development and implementing and exciting pathway forward for Samoan rugby.

The Head Coach of MS 15s will provide leadership and be accountable for the rebuilding and performance of our premier team, and play a pivotal role in accelerating our progress in coaching at all levels. This role is funded by World Rugby and the Manu Samoa Head Coach will be a valuable member of the global Head Coach network and work collaboratively in the development of Samoan rugby as well as advising/supporting initiatives that increase the competitiveness of the international game.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years coaching experience at the Super Rugby or similar premier competition level.
  • Demonstrated ability in leading, coaching and developing successful rugby teams and elite programs
  • Demonstrated ability to create vision, strategize and drive the achievement of goals including changes
  • Other - refer to attached position overview

Desirable Criteria

  • Sports Management / Business Degree
  • Level 3 Coaching Accreditation
  • International rugby coaching experience
  • HP coach development skills and experience would be desirable to enhance the capability of targeted Samoan coaches
  • Ability to speak Samoan and an understanding of Samoan culture will be an advantage but NOT essential
