Survey to put industry employment and salary trends under the microscope
People working in sport, fitness and aquatics jobs in Australia and New Zealand are being called upon to participate in a national survey mapping employment and salary trends for the sector.
The 2008 Sportspeople Workplace Survey is managed by Sportspeople, in conjunction with the School of Exercise Science and Sport Management, Southern Cross University. The 2008 Sportspeople Workplace Survey is supported by a number of industry partners including Fitness Australia, Fitness New Zealand, AUSTSWIM, NSW Sports Federation, Sport SA, VicSport, Sports Federation of Queensland, WA Sports Federation, ACTSPORT, Institute of Sports Management and DSA Consulting Services.
Age, gender and education emerged as the hot spots for the industry in the inaugural 2003 survey. According to Sportspeople?s Managing Director, Robert McMurtrie the 2008 Sportspeople Workplace Survey aims to map any changes to the employment practices of 2003.
?In many ways the data collected from the 2003 Sportspeople Workplace Survey was designed to set the foundation for comparison in future years. The questions this year are consistent with the inaugural survey, ensuring Southern Cross University is able to provide direct comparisons across all areas. We have added a number of new survey questions as well as broadened the survey to include sport, fitness and aquatics across both Australia and New Zealand. We plan to conduct the Sportspeople Workplace Survey annually as the benchmark measure of employment and salary trends in the sector.? he said.
?Naturally, all respondents maintain their anonymity when completing the online survey. Completing the survey from start to finish should take around five minutes. I would encourage everyone working in sport, fitness or aquatics in Australia and New Zealand to visit www.sportspeople.com.au or www.sportspeople.co.nz and complete the 2008 Sportspeople Workplace Survey.? he said.
Results from the 2008 Sportspeople Workplace Survey will be published jointly by Sportspeople and the School of Exercise Science and Sport Management, Southern Cross University later this year.

Since launching in 1996, Sportspeople has maintained a reputation as both a leader and innovator in recruitment and job board services for the sector. Our "More than a job board" campaign last year was aimed at continuing the growth of our "online community" bringing together job seekers, employers and people working in the sector.
Our recent website survey found that apart from using the Sportspeople Jobs Market, visitors are now utilising many of the support features available at the website.
- 91% of visitors found Sportspeople Learning useful
- 70% of visitors found Sportspeople Trade Market useful
- 76% of visitors found Sportspeople Forum useful
- 82% of visitors found Two minutes with... useful
- 89% of visitors found Sportspeople Library useful
- 85% of visitors found Who got that job? useful
- 89% of visitors found What do I need? What should I be
earning? useful
So, next time you visit the Sportspeople website, take a look around and see why we are more than a job board.

Protecting your identity and job when using an online CV service
With more people than ever now using online resources to search for work, it?s not surprising that job boards are continually developing new ways to attract candidates in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
While online CV builders and job alert systems have been around for some time, a number of job boards now offer job-to-candidate matching services aimed squarely at employers and revenue growth. In simplistic form this system allows job seekers to post their CV and personal details at a job board database which is then searchable by employers in return for a fee.
Like all market innovations there exists a wide variance in the how these job-to-candidate systems operate. The credibility of providers, the level of database sophistication and the security systems in place to protect this confidential information, are just a few of the issues which should concern job seekers.
Recently smaller scale job boards in the USA have been in the news for breaches of confidentiality, including the on selling of their database without the consent of subscribers and other instances of hackers infiltrating supposedly secure servers. The worst cases involved the details of job seekers being released to their current employer, quite a surprise for both parties!
In Australia and New Zealand we are faced with similar issues, in particular the emergence of small operators building online CV databases. The job board revenue model is a strong indicator on the likely dependence of selling the job seeker database to employers. Job boards offering free listings or harvesting (copying job ads from other sites) should be approached with caution.
Here are some quick tips to ensure your details remain safe and secure:
- Prior to uploading your CV online thoroughly check the Terms and Conditions to see how your details can be used by the job board owner. Be extra careful where a job board retains the rights to use your details in any way they decide.
- Make sure your details can only be released to prospective employers upon your consent and the job for which your name is being put forward matches your needs and career goals.
- Avoid job boards offering employers free advertisements. If a job board can?t justify charging employers for listing a job vacancy it is usually a good indication of their low market credibility and traffic.
- Make sure your CV and details cannot, under any circumstance, be released to your current employer.
The Candidate Profiles at some websites will happily release details such as current and previous jobs, qualifications etc. then go to claim they can protect your anonymity by simply not stating your name.
Naturally work history and qualifications make you easily identifiable, particularly by your employer.
